Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

Paizo seems to have been pushed into a really awkward place by the GSL delays and I think that this has somewhat forced their hand, perhaps prematurely. Having said that despite the various issue with 3.5 it is a system I still greatly enjoy playing it. Even if I do go 4e which is not definate I will still support Paizo as I feel that they do the kind of fantasy that I like really, really well. I'm sure 4e will be a perfectly playable game but it doesn't feel like its aimed at me or my view on fantasy, in fact it doesn't even feel like it willing to cater to my take on (somewhat simulationist) fantasy. Again this is just personal feelings created by reading a lot of 4e threads.

As for the whole house rules thing at this point surely thats basically what it is supposed to be the final rules will look nothing like this. They just want a basic 3.5e common ground that is similiar to what everyone has already played. They want our feedback on what was wrong with this so that they can make the final ecition what their customers want. It doesn't really surprise me that the intial download is a gaming revolution, it's not supposed to be. They just need a common, familiar point that their customers/playtesters can start from. Personally I think that this is very risky but they haven't excluded themselves from doing 4e. Only time will tell with this one.

My opinion probably doesn't matter too much since I was never Paizo's customer to begin with, but this move means that they have no real chance of getting me to buy one of their products in the near future. 4E looks great to me, and because of that I can't see myself getting caught up in an 3.5E Adventure Path that will probably go well past the release of 4E. It just doesn't interest me.

Ultimately, my problems with 3e come from the underlying mathematics of the game, which suffer great problems at high levels (see the severe AC increments through basic magic items), and so a 3.75e that needs to remain backwards-compatable with 3.5e is not of interest to me.

I have to at least partially agree. I'm not at all sure it's possible to fix what I see as the more deep and significant problems with 3.5e (Christmas tree syndrome, awkward high-level play, save or die, reliance on layered buffs and the headaches involved in that) without major surgery to the system, and that would leave the backward-compatibility thing dubious at best.

While I haven't really looked at either the 4e rumours or the Pathfinder alpha rules yet, and while I'm equally sure that 4e will have an entirely new set of problems all of its own, to be honest I think rehashing the 3.x rules is the wrong way to go in terms of advancing the hobby as a whole. Though of course, it might be entirely the RIGHT move for Paizo from a monetary perspective right now, especially if this is just intended as a stopgap to keep the company going until they do shift to 4e in a couple of years..

Let me just say, I am thrilled for the Paizians. My skimming of the rules leads me to believe that this is a solid version of the 3.5 rulesset. I am willing to bet that my DM this saturday will tell us he's switching to use certain elements from these rules.

It's 3.5 with a band-aid and fresh coat of paint. Do not want.
Sadly, I get a similar impression. When I've heard 3.75, I've hoped for a bit more at-will or pseudo-per-encounter powers, á la Monte's Book of Experimental Might. But this looks more like 3.5 with minor house rules. Too minor, it's close enough to 3.5, that you can keep playing 3.5, unless you do not have access to the books.

Well, I was already a 4E converter, but I still like 3.5 (that's why I've bought Monte's book), but Paizo's 3E rehash is a pretty plain rehash, nothing that gets rid of any problems I had with 3.5.

EDIT: What makes me sad - less 4E products from Paizo. But I still hope the line becomes successful, though without me. :(

Cheers, LT.

I'm thrilled

For quite awhile, I've been worrying that I would be unhappy with 4E when I saw it, and forced to either switch anyway, or stay with an unsupported game.

Now, I get the best of both worlds. continued 3.5 support, with the option to switch to 4E if it seems like the right thing to do later on.

I really don't understand all the Paizo haters in this thread. The idea that Paizo somehow betrayed WoTC is a complete crock. Who killed Dungeon/Dragon? Who nerfed the OGL, then promised a GSL in November, then went to mid-march without delivering it?

We are lucky that people like Jason Buhlman and Erik Mona are in a position to provide us with options. I've downloaded the Alpha Pathfinder rules, for FREE , by the way.

What I see is an incremental (not revolutionary) change to 3.5 , a rulesset that I could probably use right now to run my Savage Tide Adventure Path Campaign (we're currently in the middle of Sea Wyvern's Wake) if I chose. It preserves the value of all the 3.5 supplements I currently have, while providing a place for the game to grow in an incremental fashion. What's not to like?

I wish Paizo well, but I won't be buying any more 3e material. I was a charter Pathfinder subscriber, but I cancelled my subscriptions after I read the announcement. I too have moved PAIZO from the D&D folder in my browser to the RPG Other folder. IMO D&D will be 4e. Paizo's new game will be something else, something I will not be buying.

I would have loved to play in Pathfinder OP at conventions, but I have no intention of playing 3e after June - so I will have to be satisfied with Living FR.

BTW, it isn't just PAIZO. I have been a Living Arcanis player and judge from year one, but our group has decided not to continue with that campaign either.

While they won't be getting my money (I was actually planning on subscribing if they decided to switch to 4e, despite my dislike for premade adventures, just because the quality of what I've seen of their work looks so good), I do hope this works well for the company. I'll most definitely look at whatever 4e products they make with Necromancer when they eventually do.

I agree with this 98%. It's just that I LOVE premade adventures. Hopefully they'll still support 4E with some good stuff.
