Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

I'm deeply saddened by the impending demise of Dragon and Dungeon as print products. While I can understand how many will enjoy their new electronic incarnations, I will always prefer a print product over an electronic product, for the same reasons that many have already stated: the ability to read the content anywhere, without being dependent upon computers, servers, and various twitchy bits of technology; the more professional look a magazine has over a stack of printed-out electronic articles (not to mention the added expense of having to do so); and so on.

Also, the print magazines have been a big part of my life for many, many years now - a friend's issue of Dragon brought me back into gaming after a 5-year hiatus - and I mourn their loss as I would two close friends. (In fact, I wore black to work today.) Telling me that Dragon and Dungeon will simply be changing over to an electronic format is kind of like killing two of my friends and replacing them with Stepford Wives (or Westworld androids) and telling me that there's no real appreciable difference.

I don't think I'll be following Wizards into their new electronic realm. I may give Pathfinder a try, but its Adventure Path focus is less appealing to me than my current dose of my two favorite magazines. I'll probably end up paying full price for the first issue to see if I'll like it, rather than jump into a subscription I may not enjoy. The GameMastery modules seem like they might be more to my liking, as I prefer shorter adventures that I can link together on my own.

And, on a personal (and admittedly self-pitying) note, I guess I won't waste my time writing "Challenge of Champions VII" now. :(

Just thought I'd post my all time favourite series of Dragon covers - the chess covers by Dennis Beauvais:

Hey Paizo guys reading this:

Can you please make sure that most of the Pathfinder adventures go to 20th level (and even the occasional epic level adventure)? If I can play what I call a complete campaign (levels 1 to 20) you will have me totally sold on a Pathfinder subscription.

Otherwise, I'm kind of on the fence. There is a glut of low to mid level adventures, but until Adventure Path came along, no one really provided a complete campaign that took you from 1st to 20th. Stopping Rise of the Runelords at 15th level just doesn't sit right with me. I love playing D&D at higher levels and would love more support for that level of play.

Gah! No offense, but I hope you're opinion isn't in the majority. Ending a campaign at 12th to 16th level is the way to go, IMO. I've never played or run a campaign above L14 (a couple high level one-shots have turned me off), but my group's at L10 in AoW right now, so I guess I'll see how it goes, but I like where RotR is ending, myself.

Thanks for the quick answer

Any chance you can address the question about what products might disappear from your website come the END? Things such as your downloadable PDF's for sale and all? I know several on here would probably prefer to give you the money for them before if they can't get them over time afterwards.

None of the online map/art supplements for Dungeon, or the conversion notes, or the Age of Worms Overload, or any of the other web enhancement style stuff we've got over at paizo.com are going anywhere, nor are the for-sale PDFs of old issues of the magazines. That stuff's there until Godzilla comes along and throws Mothra at our building. Which will happen someday, I assume. 'Cause that's what Godzilla does.

Adventure Paths are as much a product of us looking at reader response as anything else. We've had a lot of feedback about doing a 1st-15th level path, and so we're trying it out. I'm really excited about it, but that level range CERTAINLY doesn't lock us in to anything.

As usual... post your thoughts and concerns about our adventure paths here and at Paizo.com and elsewere... we're out there listening and taking notes! :)

I knida figured that, I remember that there threads here and at Paizo not long after STAP was announced about how long people would like APs to go. Quite a few said 12th to 16th. When I say RotR was ending at 15th, I knew you guys were listening to the fans. Thanks James. :)

A quick reminder: everyone who wants the exclusive web material for Dragon and Dungeon on Paizo's website should probably get them and back them up before the end of September. I have a feeling that once that rolls around, those supplements will be gone forever (a lot of them, such as the $2 Tu'narath web supplement, are already gone).

Ack, good call, Al. Off I go to do some downloadin'.

This is the main difference between Paizo and Hasbro!

Would Godzilla really be able to throw Mothra that far inland? It's not like you guys are right on the Pacific or anything.

Hmm, now you've got me scared. I'm going to Japan next year with my wife (who's going to be working there for a year!). I wonder if Godzilla will let our plane land? Maybe if I throw down a few back issues of Dragon to appease him? :D
