Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

And Paizo's doing fine?

Yep.

...but is everyone who read Dungeon or Dragon going to migrate to Pathfinder? I find that unlikely.

So do we.

I hope things go well with them and all, but I can't help asking myself if they're strategy is based on a sustainable business model with good market data or just wishful thinking.

I assure you, not the latter.

The main deal-breaker for me would be price.

For me the deal-breaker will be character generation. If it can't be done as well as eTools (and that's not a high bar to reach!), then I'll limp along with what I have and not worry about the rest of the online content.

So this new campaign setting, what's "cool" about it? What makes it stand out from all the other generic stuff out there? If it's Greyhawk 2 I might as well stick with the original and play Living Greyhawk.

Is there anything unique about the setting?

I always thought that if you used a specific setting you could make a better adventure path. Instead of trying to be vanilla you can add your own flavor.

I mean really it's an adventure path. If people are using it, they probably want it to dominate their campaign. So is it going to try to please as many people as possible, like you supposedly had to with Dungeon, or are you going to make something unique and cool that doesn't fit at every table but drips with flavor?

Take Burning Sky for example. That's definately not a very portable path. I definately couldn't easily put it in FR or Eberron or even Greyhawk without turning those settings into something they aren't. However, by just using the info they've given I think the players like it better than Savage Tide (which they feel is a little too generic and shallow).

Josh,

Well you got one willing convert!

CB,

Agreed with Dungeon. I wish there would be more Maure Castle. Now that's even more unlikely.

Lor,

I think we all share it man and it will be a while before the furor will die off.

Dragonshards, Steal this Hook, Creature Competition, the monster redesign series, the recent series with the Swiftblade PrC, the Mind's Eye, the character class series (much better than the class acts guides IMO)...these are all very enjoyable.

And they were FREE. We'll see what we get when we can buy material; I'm hoping it will be as good (or maybe even better) than Dungeon or Dragon.

I mean seriously, no real limit on page space. No worrying about layout. No printer headaches. Online is the way to go.
Hey, I'm the lead member of the team for my newspaper moving us from being a print publication with a Web auxillary to being a Web publication with a print hardcopy. But to imagine that suddenly the cornucopia of good material is going to show up when there hasn't been one in a very long time -- sorry, but Creature Competition is sub-awful, Steal This Hook is a glorified message board post, the monster redesign series hasn't had a new installment in months and the character class series could be renamed "DUH" -- is a half-step away from clapping to keep Tinkerbell alive.

WotC has given no reason to believe that, once we're paying money, they'll start producing online content worth a damn. They haven't even staffed up for it yet.

Unbelievable. I can't believe Wizards is really this foolish. They're hurting fans, game stores, and pretty much the whole industry by nuking these magazines.

The home of Wormy, What's New, Fineous Fingers, gone?? Are you freaking kidding me?

My day is ruined.

BTW, you know I really do think the name "Pathfinder" is appropriate (Adventure Path term and all), but you do know that there's a movie out called Pathfinder right?

Couldn't you come up with something more original?

We've had the name Pathfinder for this product for quite some time before a movie of the same name popped up. Hell, you might as well lambast us for naming our product after the 1840 book written by James Fenimore Cooper of the same title or tell us we'd copied Nissan. :-)

THIS SUCKS

I've been a loyal reader of Dragon since January 1986, and have never missed an issue since. I can't believe that NO ONE will be publishing these iconic magazines anymore. I don't want any F******* web based content; I want a magazine I can sit and read in a comfortable chair or relaxing outside.

Wow. A whole line of urban adventures is really exciting to me. If you guys occasionally dip your toes into some of established published cities, like Freeport or Ptolus, my brain might well explode.

Styes adventure path. You know you want it.

Awww, thanks! Those articles were the most fun I had writing anything for WotC's website (with the exception of the enormous adventure, "The Thunder Below"). I always wished that they could have commissioned some pictures for some of the monsters from the Far Corners, though. The necroclasm would have looked particularly neat...
If you ever feel the desire to write up a book like that for Paizo, I'll be on it like a shot. I used to go to the WotC site exclusively for Far Corners and Spellbook for a very, very long time.
