Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

I went ahead and transitioned my credit with Paizo to Pathfinder. Whether WotC will merit my money for their offering is yet to be seen, but Paizo has done nothing but be awesome.

Me too.

Paizo rocks the house in many, many ways. I hope no one blames them for the death of these two fine magazines.

There aren't many consistent and comforting things in life. Knowing there was a Dungeon and a Dragon out there, every month, was one of them.

I think that "I just got punched in the gut" feeling I'm experiencing is partially the sad realization that growing old means outliving things you love; the sense of injustice (the implication -- correct or not -- that Paizo is somehow being punished); and the not-so-fond memories of the development of WotC's electronic D&D tool called Master Tools that was going to be this big deal and ended up dead (its much slimmer, somewhat malnourished offspring is eTools, of course). I haven't seen WotC be particularly successful in this field, and I don't have much hope that their online/electronic efforts will be particularly helpful for the way I play and my needs. I hope I'm proven wrong.

At least 20 times in this thread, I have read the phrase "punched in the gut".

At least 15 times in this thread, I have read something similar to "it feels like my best friend just died".

This is far too often to be considered hyperbole.

Dragon and Dungeon have an immensely loyal following, and WotC are taking that loyalty, cutting it into little bitty pieces, and flushing it down the toilet, so they can appear fresh and revolutionary.

Add +1 to the "punched in the gut" feeling crowd. I literally feel horrible now.

In fact, Wayne is doing the covers for the first 12 volumes of Pathfinder. :-)
Very cool. It looks like he's doing more than just the covers too. :)

Will the GameMastery tiles be designed to work with Pathfinder? (I think we'll have to learn a new acronym for that--PF) Or, alternately, will PF come with its own tiles?

(shrugs)

Oh, well. I'll miss the nice extra monthly OotS and Zogonia. I let my subscription lapse a few years ago and haven't seen any reason to pick it up again based off the copies my friends got.

Don't know that I'll check out the online thing, but you never know.

But I am truly worried about the lack of a major print magazine with advertiing. The hobby games trade needs a means to advertise new products to people effectively. Dragon and Dungeon were that platform.

For the last couple of years it seemed only computer games and minis games actually advertised in the magazines anymore though. After the d20 bubble burst, you rarely saw ads for RPG stuff that wasn't D&D.

Heh, just realized we won't be seeing any more of those "Why doesn't Dungeon run more Eberron adventures" threads anymore.... :p

Wow, this news needs to be on the front page. Hey, Life ended its publishing earlier this year.

Working in magazines for the last decade, I can certainly understand Wotcs point of view. Wotc can produce a similiar product in electronic format that will be far more useful to its readers. I have 50 magazines of dragon and dungeon that collect dust because there is nothing I can do with them. Running an adventure from them is too distracting considering how dms like to make things their own. REaders have pushed for an online publication for some time and its a long time coming. Now readers can
1. cut and paste what they need
2. easily refer to material in game
3. use the images and maps in game via a laptop or printout to whatever size they want.

It's a win win situation. What I am going to miss though is the comics and other articles.

This further reinforces wotc's position of integrating electronics into the next generation of dungeon mastering.
