Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

That's not the point about any of this. The point is that Hasbro cut loose Dungeon and Dragon as loss leaders five years ago. Paizo struggled initially - but ultimately turned it around and tbh - neither publication has ever been better.

Specifically what they said at the time was:

“This deal is another example of Wizards of the Coast’s ongoing initiative to focus on what we do best, design and bring to market great games for our consumers,” said Loren Greenwood, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of Wizards of the Coast...

I'm still not quite getting the hows and whys behind the change in attitude. Why they suddenly decided this was a good change, and how they will be able to handle both aspects of their D&D line (digital publishing and development).

My speculation is just that we don't know WotC's mind because they haven't spoken it. I'm sure you can't come out blasting WotC for ripping the magazines from you, but it doesn't mean the fans should personalize it so much. Without knowing the path the decisions took, I am not going to judge their motives, just the results. (Which are a ways off.)

Which is silly, because they've had just as much time (if not more) than Paizo to know what was coming down the pike, and they've been almost deathly silent aside from the announcement, while the Paizo guys have already begun previewing what they're working on.

It's like releasing a movie into theaters with no publicity. It doesn't seem like a very good business decision to me to not have anything to show, nor does it engender much goodwill (as demonstrated by the majority of posts in this thread and elsewhere).

Drew,

Again you're expecting too much from a bunch of management people that have no clue what a real gamer wants. Just shills.

Grump,

Finger them twice for me! :p ;)

Wik,

No it is (a betrayal),because at no point did WotC say "Well hey we might offer an online magazine to you and then cancel Dragon/Dungeon if it goes well." They just did it and no explanation was given.

Ranger man,

I think that's the point. You can't. They believe too much in credit ability and not in the fact many people don't own or want credit cards. :p

Merric,

Yeah well at this point, for once, Hong is right. :p

No, it's better for them (WotC). I understand where they going, but I also DISAGREE with where they are going with this.

How am I supposed to subscribe without a credit card?

Reg - on that topic - I hear you loud and clear. We had a lot of complaints about this when we sold Wyvern Crown and required a credit card to do it.

Answer: You purchase a pre-paid Visa or Mastercard at your bank or corner store. It's a debit card you can use like a normal Visa. You load it up with cash as you need it.

I really don't wish WotC badly for their "electronic initiative". God knows, there is a lot of really cool stuff you can do online you can't do elsewhere.

In fact - there's stuff that is so frigging cool coming to your computer for use in PnP - even Wotc doesn't know about it yet :)

But that's a long distance call from canceling Dungeon and Dragon. That's overriding and palpable error - if for no other reason than it squarely kicks your most loyal fans straight in the nads.

I would consider Paizo to be the superior publisher then. I don't want to say "jealousy," becuase I suspect it's more decisions being made by someone in a dark room who isn't and hasn't been playing tabletop.

I know, I know. Me and my cursed Vulcan logic! It will be the death of me, I tell you. :p

Drew,

Yeah well logic is fine. It's just not applicable with management execs. :p As for the bad grammar, I blame it on the rap generation. :p ;)

Wow..... I'm totally floored. How sad is it that the cover of the Dragon#1 Biggeekus posted almost had me tear up?
I've been getting Dragon since I was 10 years old, either as subscription or from the stands. Been getting Dungeon since it started. Yeah, both may have sucked at times, but damn it, they were there making me feel like a part of the gaming community even when I had no one to play with.
When I was about 12 years old I had taken all the covers off my copies and papered my bedroom walls with them. I spent many hours daydreaming about the scenes in those covers. I still have all the cover-less issues as well.
It's really odd how hard this news is hitting me. Part of it is that my long time gaming companion will be gone, and part is that both mags have been so damn good in the past few years. Recent articles have spurred my imagination for new games and characters like it hasn't since I was a kid. And now it's gonna end.
Well, I guess all I can say is: Thanks Pazio for making sure that both mags are going out on the highest note possible, and I look forward to your new lines.
