Paladin 4th E

Having played a paladin in a "one shot" campaign almost exactly like this, I can give you some pointers. That 2000 gold won't go very far but

I might suggest Iron Armbands of Power for 1,800gp. +2 on all melee attacks, all the time.

The WotC CharOp boards have some excellent suggestions for paladin builds. Striker paladins are loads of fun to play. If you would rather more suggestions here, I could do that too...

God I wish I could just see Popular Builds in the Character Builder. Not WotC's crap prebuild stuff, the builds people are actually building and playing. Wading through the CharOp boards is like a labor of Hercules.

or you could hybrid

play an aragorn-styler TWF "paladin" (paladin|ranger) who takes multiple swings per round with a battle axe (reskinned double ax). Your hybrid talent is paladin armor prof, you take double ax prof but pretend it's a battle ax. Keep an extra battle ax on hand with dwarven thrower property.

Iron armbands are a no-brinaer. Plus take your mount summoning at level 6 and ride around with Ardent Strike which you can use when charging. So it's like using a two handed weapon (battle axe) with two strikes instead of one (more fun to attack multiple times), you just don't get the versatile +1 bonus when using it with Twin Strike, but with all your other attacks you do. E.g. RBAs to Divine Challenge at ranger. Take attacks on the run and you can use it on your mount since your "speed" is now your mount's speed. Also you can use a Fighter's Shield or Sun Shield (paragon) in your offhand and still fight with Twin Strike on your horse when you're using your dwarven thrower battle axe and shield combo to be more defensive.

Son of Mercy frees up having to take Honored Foe, and allows even more potent debuffing since you can mark at range, slow'em with an RBA, denying melee-only enemies attacks, when charge in and slaughter them. Hold Fast, Off-hand strike.

Be sure to take Master of Arms so you can swap around weapons, and use some gloves of storing to pop away your shield as a free action. Bless Weapon works well with this refluffing of a double-axe -> battle axe since you'll have +1/1d6 and 12-20 crits on undead all the time, with each one of your attacks. Your main weapon can be a battlecrazed double-axe and keep a blood fury handaxe or something to become "bloodied" for your nova turn. Headsman's Chop feat is great with Son of Mercy's proning at level 20 if you're using axes.
