Paladin/Cleric Turning Ability

I imagine this is dealt with in the splatbooks, but it seems a little unclear from the PHB alone. Would a Paladin3/Cleric1 turn undead as a second level cleric or as two first level ones?

As 2nd level cleric. I think it is stated at the multiclassing section at th PHB. At least it's in the SRD

Paladin/Clerics
In the special case of turning undead, both clerics and experienced paladins have the same ability. In the case of a multiclassed paladin/cleric, if the character's paladin class level is level 3 or higher, the effective turning level is the character's cleric level plus the paladin level minus 2.

Page 56 in the PH under Class Features. The rule says "If the character's paladin is level 3 or higher, her effective turnig level is her cleric level plus her paladin level minus two. Thus, a 5th-level paladin/4th-level cleric turns undead like a 7th-level cleric."

And answering the question above, a 3rd-level paladin/1st-level cleric, turns undead as a 2nd-level cleric.
