D&D (2024) No more Cleric and Sorc dips!

I would not play a game without multiclassing. I think in 10 years of 5E I only played one character past level 3 that did not multiclass. That character was a Kender Conquest Paladin. I did have several single class characters die before level 3 and before they multiclassed.

One interesting thing is it appears multiclassing is no longer an "optional" rule in 2024, it is a core rule. It is possible I missed something, so let me know if I am wrong in this.

Everything is optional, it just depends on what the group agrees to (and how far the DM can put their foot down before players disagree).

As I've gotten older, I've become more appreciative and open to most player options, but my ban hammer has also become adamantine, and multiclassing has just become one of those things that is "kill it with fire".

For the first time in running D&D 5E, none of my players have a multiclass character by Level 4. That is remarkable because I have 3 players who almost always play multiclass characters. The 2014 Rules made so many 1-level dips too tasty to pass up. Now they are valuing getting those higher level abilities.

I'm curious to see how this goes, as we hope to go to Epic and play at L20 for a bit to enjoy it. The plan is a full 2024 experience.

There’s alot of alternate paths to get abilities people typically would have multiclassed for. Mostly specific level 1 spells, cantrips and AC.

Also, if you’re playing by 2024 content only, there’s fewer great level 1 spells and cantrips to grab.

I’d expect that martials after level 5 will be a bit more prone to multiclassing than lower level ones, single level dip for alot of rages or hunters marks is too obvious. Probably less martial / full caster dips, paladins and eldritch knights possibly being exceptions. I’d also expect that casters will be even less prone to multiclass later.

I like that the Feats pull some of the weight for "dipping" into other class abilities, like Magic Initiate. Also, at higher levels, the "Enspelled" magic items can help support a specific build that wants access to a specific spell, like "Enspelled Plate Armor of Shield".

I allow expanded content because it is compatible, so Silvery Barbs and other spells and feats will be allowed.

I have considered a house rule that any 3rd party spells have to be found as treasure, or researched/created by the PC.
