Paladin Dragon Mount question.

First Post
Okay, I read over the stuff in the Defenders of the Faith, and it mentions in Dragon Mounts where a small paladin can call a dragon sooner then a medium paladin.

Here's my question.

What is the lowest possible level a Kobold paladin could call a Silver dragon mount?

Very Young and Young are medium sized, which would work for a Kobold's mount. So when could he call a Young or Very young silver dragon?

if i interpret correctly...

"if the mount can fly, expect its CR to be no more then 4 less than your paladin level (to a maximum of CR 4 at 8th level)."

so using that example, any 8th level paladin (size Small) could get a very young silver dragon (CR 4)

and if Leadership was used, a young silver dragon could be recruited as a cohort at 13th level (minimum - the level equivalent for a young silver is 12th)

the DotF mentions Small paladins getting mounts sooner because on the dragon cohort chart, the first dragons listed under each alignment (with the lowest CR and level eqivalents) are size medium and unavailable for Medium sized paladins

I'd be careful. I let a 7th-level sorcerer choose a silver dragon as an Improved Familiar. Oops.

Take a good look at it's spell-like abilities: Polymorph Self.
Now look at it's breath weapon. Forget the direct-damage aspect, look at the "status" effect; every 1d4 rounds.

At 8th level, you can have a sorceror pumping an Acid Orb for 4 times a day with an 18 charisma, doing 32d6 points of damage. Now, compare that to the Silver dragon's 4d8 every 1d4 rounds.

Considering a Kobold has a -4 to Str, Combat from the guy isn't going to be enormous. So a little edge can't be that bad. :)

what's that from, Xarlen?

T&B.

The 'orb' spells, Fire, Sonic, Cold, Electrcity, Acid.

4th level. Ranged touch attack. 1d6/level (15d6 max). Can break into different orbs which split the damage up (For example for a 10th level caster two orbs for 5d6 points of damage). If they miss, splash in a 10' radius spread doing 2 points of damage per damage die.

And depending on the elemental form, has a secondary effect; Slowed if Cold, Dazed if Fire, sickened if Acid, etc etc.

thanks!

in my group we have tons of d20 books (splatbooks, etc.), but we don't usually use spells from sources other than the PH. we're just not fully integrated yet! :p

That's one of my favorite things ABOUT the d20 books. :)

Especially when my party basicly just has the PHB, so they have no idea what just hit them...

i'm actually surprised that my DMs haven't sprung that on our groups more often

DM: "You only take four points of damage. Now make a Fortitude save versus impotence."
player: "NNNNOOOOOoooooooo!"

:p
