Paladin extra-special mounts

Hi,

Are there rules covering special mounts for paladins beyond what's in the Player's Handbook (eg hippogriffs)? Feats?

Cheers

There is a section in the DMG for other Special Mounts. I believe (not 100%) that the general rule is the Mount's CR should be 3 less than the Paladin's level or 4 less if it is a flying mount.

Yep, there's loads of stuff. The DMG has alternative paladin mounts, for starters. Draconomicon also had some options, and there have been a few others here and there as well.

Level 20 character, actually:

Ranger 2/Paladin 3/Beastmaster 2/Halfling Outrider 10/Wild Plains Outrider 3

feats: Devoted Tracker (Complete Adventurer), Dragon Steed (Dragonomicon), Mounted Combat (PHB), Mounted Archery (PHB)

You have:
Effective Ranger level 12
Effective Druid level 15 (Beastmaster)
Effective Paladin level 16

Total is Druid level 21 (Ranger is 6 equivalent plus BM "Druid" levels), Paladin Level 16

You get a Very Young Gold at Paladin level 16 with the usualy 5th level Paladin goodies (+2HD, +4 NAC, +1 Str)
Druid animal companions get another bump at level 21 (every 3 levels after 18 as per Epic book) (so gets +14HD, +7 Str/Dex, +14 NAC, etc.)

A Very Young Gold starts at 11HD. Add the above, and you have a 27HD Gold Dragon plus a bunch of other things. It is 100% legal (and not that powerful, in any case, as your PC will end up being a Fighter with no feats, less average HP, etc.).

IDHMBIFOM, so I can't say for sure, but I would presume that those PrCs would only add to the levels of one of the classes you have for animal companion or paladin mount levels, not both (or in your case, 3 classes). But you'd need someone with the books to confirm one way or the other.

Also, I am pretty sure that you can't apply 'animal companion' benefits and 'special mount' benefits to the same creature, although IDNHMBIFOM either.

EDIT: Come to that, how are you applying animal conpanions benefits to dragons anyway? They aren't Animals, they are Dragons! :D

Thats what the Devoted Tracker feat is for.
