1. When is a good level for them to get a holy avenger?

2. What if the Paladin wanted a cat like creature. What would you all suggest?

1. Em, whenever the campaign felt appropriate to dole it out.
2. The noble lion. If there aren't any nearby lions in your area, you could always use the excuse that they were hunted down by an ancient empire for games and entertainment until they became extinct ...

Lion is CR 3 and large. That could work.

If you wanted to go weaker you could use a Leopard (CR 2, meduim size=fixable) and call it a Lion. There's also the Panther (Leopard or Lion stats). If he wanted a Tiger (CR 4, Large) you could change those to Lion.

Another option is to use the Leopard stats for the lion, make it Large (penalties apply), make it look celestial, and give it the celestial template version of Smite Evil (only). That would give it a Celestial Lion feel while maintaining game balance. You might not even let it talk (empathic link would of course work).

On the Holy Avenger, I would go with the idea that they, uh, won't be getting one. Not unless the campaign calls for it or they undertake a long (and deadly) quest for their church. These things don't grow on trees here. Vorpel is the same way IMC.

Hope that helped,

well Defenders of the faith has a couple of pages long set of rules to cover a Paladin with non-horse mounts, if you play paladins or if you DM for them a lot you could pick that up. If not you could use the idea below.

as for the holy avenger, well for a minimum just look in the DMG for the amount of $$ a character should have per level and find at what point the paladin could afford one, realisicaly look for a level that has more money then the previous level by the value of the sword or more. But like said above, not every paladin has a holy avenger. In my world there are about 5 of them in the whole world... Most paladins never see one, much less own one. (especialy sence one of the Major villians has one in his private sanctom for his own uses).

***Idea***
okay look in the MM, find the CR for a war horse. Look in the MM, find the CR for the proposed mount for the paladin. Subtract the CR for the horse from the other monster. Multiply the result by two. If positive then subtract it from the paladin's level. That is the paladins effective level for mount bonuses with that particular mount. (if that number is lower then a paladin would get a mount then he can't have the mount).
If a paladin's mount is intelegent (int 3+) then it must have a LawGood alignment. If it is non-intelegent then it must have a Neutral alignment.

But then that is just how I would house rule it... no promisses

Well my instinct tells me that the minimum level to obtain a Holy Avenger is at least 5th....and probably closer to 10th for the full powered version.

However I always preferred the idea that the Holy Aveneger grew in power as the Paladin progressed. So perhaps the sword only starts at a +2 or +3 with one minor ability. As the Paladin completed certain requirements the sword advanced so that by 10th or 12th level the Sword had all of the usual powers of the Holy Avenger.

Again this is all dependent on the BML (Basic Magic Level) of your campaign world.

I don't have an exact answer, but here is my suggestion. I have always made Holy Avengers very rare in my cmapaigns. Which is to say, that every paladin PC could acquire one, but they were rare in the world. The church had lost the secrets of making them, indeed it may have been they were sent from god, not crafted by man. As such they had become lost. Many of them with their bearers. I would seed a legend of where one might be found, and make the PC go on a quest to find it, and prove his worth.

I would make finding a Holy Avenger a multi-part quest. The character does not actually find the Holy Avenger, he gathers the materials necessary to create one and one is made for him, if he is an exemplerary Paladin of his god. The sword could be the amalgam of the shards of several legendary figures from the churches history, all paladins who died serving their god by fighting evil, each piece in the possession of the creatures or organizations that killed the legendary paladins. I would not let a Paladin of less than twelfth level have a shot at achievin this goal, and would make the quests difficult for a group of under 15th level, but hey that's me, after all it requires a character of 18th level to make and a substantial outlay of experience (4,800). Once the materials are gathered I would forego the largest part of the money cost of making the weapon, assuming that the various quests were to get the expensive materials themselves.

As to the mount, I agree with Melriken, pick up Defenders of the Faith, the section on Paladin Mounts is pretty good. As to the specific cat-mount, a unique creature, one that is seemingly the last of it's kind could be very cool, maybe a panther like flying mount or something else with some unusual aspects to it. Why does the Paladin want a feline mount? Of course that's an assumption, you could simply be talking about a feline companion, but becase we are discussing a paladin, I think it's safe to assume you mean mount. His reasons for wanting one might give you some direction in what to do with it.

Certainly not before 14th level (150,000 GP wealth, average, for a 120,315 GP sword), and probably even later than that!

A celestial lion sounds good.

Monte Cook's revision of the paladin gave them a holy sword beginning at level 12 -- but at that level, that's definitely not worth a Holy Avenger. Over the following levels, the sword gains new abilities.

Maybe around level 16.
