Paladin Smite Evil with ranged attacks

Okay, I know there are substitution levels out there for elven paladins, and probably a feat somewhere, but really:

Is it all that bad to allow Smite Evil to be used normally with both melee and ranged weapons/attacks?

I can't see any real balance issues allowing a regular paladin to get smite evil bonuses with both their longsword or a longbow.

Thoughts?

I don't see a reason why not.

Also don't see why a Monk needs a feat to use Stunning Fist more than once/round. And even then, it's to use it TWICE per round, take the feat again for 3, and so on. Yay!

It's probably because it's seen as less heroic or something for the Paladin to make a ranged smite. I have no idea, just my guess.

I gotta concur, I don't see any problems at all with allowing smite for paladins without having to rely on feats. Its not a really huge boost, its situational at most.

I guess that it was initially made a melee-only attack because the image of a paladin was one of a gallant knight who disdains ranged weapons, even though there's no rule that paladins can't use ranged weapons. And "smite" kind of denotes a short range attack.

If you want you can always add a max range (30 ft.) if you're unsure about its relative power and try that out at first.
