Paladin Warhorse

On the surface, I think it's dumb.

I want a paladin to be able to bond with a mount in more than a mystical manner, but as one intelligent, lawful, good creature to another. The Paladin serves his mount by grooming, feeding, healing and just caring for it; the mount serves their rider by being vigilant and strong in battle, not poofing in and out whenever the Paladin thinks about it, then going off to a never-never land when he doesn't. Seems like a Disposable Mount Spell.

But with this being said: I won't rule it out of the game, if a player wants to use it, then i'm fine with it. It's all about options after all.

Just posted this over in the WotC 3.5 chat thread also.

I know a lot of Living Greyhawk players are going to rejoice at the Paladin mount-summoning rules. There are a lot of LG modules out there that didn't take into account the liability of a Paladin's mount and several infamous mods led to a lot of mount deaths with no way around it. Can't take your mount on a boat? No problem now.

I strongly dislike this change, as well. First it was the drow weapons not disintegrating in sunlight, now its the paladin's warhorse . . . crazy changes being made in the name of game balance. It's a classic case of the cart in front of the horse. Lame.

But the drow weapons disolving in sunlight was simply an issue of game balance. I thought that was stupid. 1st the fact every drow had a magic weapon and second that since they all had +1 swords the founding fathers had to make them disolve to keep the treasure from getting out of hand.

I can safely say that this is my least favorit 3.5e revision. I do not want mounted combat to be something that a paladin can take advantage anytime and anywhere. I don't want spirited charges and rideby attacks zipping around the archfiend's throne room or unholy altar or what have you, riding circles around befuddled foes on foot. That will get real old real quick. Looks like I've got my first rule zero situation of 3.5e.

But in time bandits King Arthur and Billy the Kidd show up on horses to take on the BBG. Aragorn and Teoden (at least in the Movie) when they break the seige of Helms Deep ride horses inside. As does William Wallace in Barveheart. I do not see the problem with this...

The Bonded Mount has been a class ability that NO paladin I have ever run into in 20 years of gaming has ever used. NONE.

I've actually had the exact opposite experience as Henry. Every Paladin I have ever run for or played has had a mount and that mount was very special to the character.

The only Paladin I ever played was lucky enough to get a unicorn mount which was quite cool. That aside, I have one PC who loves to play Paladins. His first Paladin character actually was given back his childhood horse that was recently killed in combat and it had enhanced stats. And the most recent character was going for a wardog as his character was a halfling. That would have worked for me.
I could see the problem with the pallys mount....

But I don`t think the problem is really solved with this abilitie.
In a "Dungeon" Campaign it wouldn`t be of more use than yet.
In a Campaign with mounted combat it could be vice Versa, btw how many of you have equipped your mounts with barding?

But what is with a seafaring Campaign, or a character who see no use in mounted combat, like a dwarf or such?
Wouldn`t ist be better to have replacement abilities?

Mind my comment about it growing old real quick. Notice how the examples you cite are specifically intended to be irregular circumstances, which is what makes them dramatic (or in the case of Time Bandits, absurd; wasn't there also a tank and a spaceship in that scene?).

Yeah but real life IS absurd- http://www.montecook.com/arch_rave3.html

Thats what makes it so great. Without magic, weird stuff happens. With magic, REALLY weird stuff happens. With magic, the villan can always find the PCs, the guys that are supposed to be miles away can be around the corner, Han Solo can make the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs, the guy that dies last week can come back, and you can find weird stuff in dungeons. The paladin's mount is now like the highlanders sword - how the hell does he have it all the time when there is no real place to put it? Its a Kind of Magic...

So far we have the Poké-horse.

The Invisible Highlander Horse Holster-trick.

The Lord of the Rings entrance.

The *POOF* magic horse.

And the "warhorse not appearing in this game."

Any others? ;)

All good reasons to try the change. Not perfect for all to be certain but it's nice to have the option.

Then there's Optimus Prime's trailer. Hey yeah, for those opposed to the revision, just assume that the horse is always there but just off-screen, only appearing when the Paladin needs to "roll out". Yeah that's the ticket (did I mention I've seen Morgan Fairchild naked?)

What about oldfashioned flesh and blood palamounts like they were in 3e? Really I favor my Light Warhorse I got me at level 1 over this *poof* horselike being.
