Cast spells = Use powers, or whatever they are called.

Dang. I was hoping the crusader had killed the paladin and taken his stuff!
If you're equating spells to powers, then every class in 4e casts spells because they all have powers.

All we can really infer from Mearls' comments is that the paladin class uses magic in some way, shape, or form and is therefore not a viable class for a no-magic campaign. The paladin uses the Divine power source, which is undoubtedly inherently magical. For all we know the only "spells" they have are their smites. I have a feeling they won't have a watered-down cleric spell list the way the 3.5 one does but we'll have to wait and see.

But since smites are inherently magical, excluding paladins from the list of classes that don't use magic actually doesn't prove that they'll cast spells.

This new information does not settle the issue.

You are right it doesn't settle the issue, but it sure as heck goes a way's towards confirming paladinsa will get 'spellcasting' (or whateevr the heck they call it now. Crap, this is getting confusing already)

@puknul: By spells I mean the same things clerics will 'cast'. You know, the same way paladins could cast a few cleric spells in earlier editions.

While I understand your hope, (Don't agree with it, but I understand it) Paladin has been confirmed as a PHB class for some time now. AFAIK, no mention of Crusaders at all.

Right but I don't know that they will. FWIW, 4e appears to be calling cleric spells "prayers". Paladins might get a few prayers but since they're getting a lot more smites, that might be what makes them a "magical" class as opposed to a "non-magical" one (although I'm sure I read somewhere that even the Martial power source was supposed to be considered "magical").

I wouldn't get too excited. Mearls didn't say it was an exhaustive list.

Even if it was, he may be assuming that anyone who wants to get away from clerics also wants to avoid all holy rollers.
