D&D (2024) Spell Theif is not as bad aa it looks.

To steal Blinding smite the Rogue actually has to be hit with an attack and damaged
So you take 1d4-1 damage as the 8 dex paladin makes finesse attacks with the dagger
Moreover you are trading a crit on a sneak attack for a crit on a spell attack of 4th level or lower.
Sneak attack stacks with smite.
You get both on a crit.
Yeah this can be good, but most Rogues have a crappy intelligence. Pushing Intelligence makes this a lot better, but not many do this.
Spell Thief is almost never going to work against an enemy spell. I agree. A small chance without Int, assuming you even fight a spell casting enemy.

But you don't need a good DC to steal Mass Cure Wounds from a friendly cleric.
That can be a good use of it if the caster does not mind losing the spell, but it is hardly OP.powerful IMO.
Never said it was OP.
Just better used on an ally spell than an enemy.

Edited the title.

Spellthief was one of my favorite 3.x classes and as much as I'm saddened it's been relegated to such a late-level feature, it's heartening to see the spirit of it carried on.

Our 3.x Spellthief basically played like Rogue (X-Men). Our spellcasters were regularly giving her spells to cast later at a more convenient date.
