Paldin Concept

I am going to play in a short campaign soon, and he asked me to play something interesting. So I started wandering through my old pics and came across a Games Workshop pic of the Green Knight. This inspired an idea of a tiefling who becomes convinced that his presence is a sign of the worlds sin (could you blame him, being treated as he is) and sets out to right it. He chooses the path of the knight because he may hide his features, and yet not work from the shadows. Somehow he ends up following a very specific ethos (LG with very chivalric views) and the powers of the universe gave him the powers of a paladin. He now hunts undead, demons, and those who would corrupt the world he now has chosen to protect. The religions of the world do not trust him, but he fights on nonetheless. He still has the unnatural aura of a tiefling, and an outisider. He may be hailed as a hero, until the helm comes off, and then he is the demon they fear, except in his heart.

My question is very open ended, what do you think of the character, as players or DMs. I'm not so much worried about mechanics, though that may figure in to some extent.

Edit: just making it make more sense

I love that concept and it will surely make for some interesting encounters and roll playing oppurtunities. Paladin just saves village from evil spell, takes off helmet, villagers "Ahhhh...Demon, kill it!!!"

I like

i agree :D sounds like a great character to play, very certainly "something interesting"

Thank you all for the kind words. :)

Another aspect of teh character is that he feels he must complete some sort of quest to redeem himself of sin. I had an idea of him wishing to follow in the footsteps of a famous knight, or hero who suffered a series of trials. What sort of thing, from history or fiction, would you suggest I model this on?

if you take Greek mythology as an example, quests of this type are usually dictated by a power higher than the character (like a king or god/dess). you could do that or look to a higher member of the paladin order or clergy of the god worshipped (especially where atonement is concerned)

Well, do you want it to be near impossible quests like Heracules or something a little more mundane and doible?

Originally I was thinking of the Herculean Labors, but I realized as herois as DnD is its not THAT heroic. I was thinking of romantic poems, chivalric ideals, etc.

If a god, or the unknown powers that granted me to abilities of a paladin, or even contemporary seers, and revered paladins were to hand me these quests, that would work though.

What if you just did good deeds? Keeping score or a list of good ddeds really seems to go against the purpose of the deeds. Or do good deeds and then every so often get divine inspiration of something major that needs done in the name of good. Most DM's would enjoy that type of plot hook.

You are defintly right about that one. "Not by good deeds alone are we saved, but by the grace of god" He is not necesarilly of a christian background, but that is a concept in many religions, I would think. Could be wrong.

I may look at some of the divine feats in last months dragon, and work towards the seer feat in it. That way I can get those visions.
