True.

....and puzzles are often constructed that way, at least in playable adventures. ;)

Given the Proverbs quote, I'd say you are meant to put the corpse "back to sleep". ...And just in case puzzle-solving fails, you should prepare for combat.

Come to think of it, perhaps you are the "they have done mischief", and your sleep will be taken away unless you cause some to fall?

If the puzzle is so hard you have to ask for help, and get lots of time to do so, then the DM is at fault here.

That's not the only explanation. The person asking us is "Question". And in case you hadn't noticed, he lives up to his handle quite well on these boards, asking questions pretty much every day. I don't think Question asking for help is a sign of anything beyond Question asking another question on the board :)

Furthermore, most campaign settings don't have a Bible. If your campaign setting doesn't have us, then it's relying on OOC knowledge, and that's unfair (and breaks the suspension of disbelief, too). In this case, it just looks like the biblical line happened to match the description of the puzzle.

I don't think it has to do with out of character knowledge. It's just a passage of text with probably everything you need right there in the text. In fact, I am guessing the 4,1, and 6 analysis was correct.

Interesting intepretation. Cause what to fall though?

Hmm in addition, perhaps some background on the adventure is in order.

Setting : City of Greyhawk

There is a building in the city that is apparently the entry to a evil pocket dimension. The building is of course invulnerable to all attempts to damage it and has the capability to defend itself. A resurrected vampire is suspected to be behind it. The church of heireneous went so far as to sent a group of high level paladins/clerics/other holy adventurers in, but apparently they failed. The party is the backup plan. So far the adventure has consisted of examining mostly empty rooms and getting traps sprung on us. Someone decided to jump through a "hole in space" that turned out to be a portal, and the rest of us had no choice to follow. We ended up in a cemetary like area, with a LOT of zombies, and the cleric quickly found out that he gets a penalty to turning checks while in the pocket dimension. We ran to the mausoleum, evading the zombies, and are now in this room.

So we can guess the "hung man" is one of the poor saps from the Church of Heireneous. And the "extra entrails" below him........ (which could be a very discusting monster, BTW)

Get the poor guy down.

I don't mean to be rude, or say that your DM is being a rip-off, but that sounds like Silent Hill... just a little bit. And if it IS, in any way, like Silent Hill.

Get the poor soul down.

But have your hands on your weapons.

And the 4-1-6 thing is most likely correct, try the "4"s first, as messing around with those ones will yield less trap "spring-age" than the 6.

Buuut yeah, have fun. Please tell us what happens?

Actually, as a final sidenote: If there's undead OUTSIDE the church, then there's going to be WORSE Undead INSIDE the church, as is the basic rule for desecrated hallowed grounds.

4 shields, 1 sword, 6 dragons?
4 shields, 6 dragons, 1 sword?
6 shields, 1 dragon, 4 swords?
6 shields, 4 swords, 1 dragon?
6 shields, 4 dragons, 1 sword?
6 shields, 1 sword, 4 dragons?

These are possibilities... Also see if a hook attaches itself to the corpse for every block that sticks.

Cause one to fall... eleven holes...

4 shields, 4 of a second type, 3 of the third type.

Mayhaps.

Also, in a square indentation, filling 11 of 12 holes would leave one open to possibly create one of those sliding picture puzzles. Savvy?
