As Kelvyn charges forward he recalls the following:
  • Goblins are native to temperate forests and plains, preferring coastal regions; they generally dwell in caves, having little inclination to build themselves.
  • As is typical of humanoid creatures, they have no special defenses or attacks, save those that they learn through experience. Of the various goblinoids, the small sized goblin tends towards neutral evil alignment.
  • They are just as intelligent and cunning as humans, although they are inclined towards pyromania and what the civilized consider to be insane behavior. And they hate dogs and horses... a LOT.
Kelvyn runs the goblin through with his sword, dealing what appears to be a mortal blow. The goblin lets out a piercing, scratchy squeal as it grasps its chests and falls unconscious to the ground, bleeding profusely.

Jamir recalls the goblins' native environment and typical nature, but unlike Kelvyn cannot quite recall more beyond that. His javelin fell short of the goblin, as the creature hopped out of the way with agility. The goblin cries out a nasty curse in his wretched tongue at Jamir as he hurls himself forward, cutting down with his dogslicer at the bard (charge). He cuts into Jamir and Melanie shrieks as his thigh begins to bleed a little from the strike, but it is only a scratch (Defense 22: hit, 5 slashing damage, reduced to 2).

Thrindar's spell seems to aid both his allies and some of the people who are panicked. A few of them call down, and Father Zantus begins ushering some into the cathedral. At the same time, Zantus himself breaks off a nearby plank and, spying a goblin peering under the podium, cracks it over the head. The creature spins but does not quite fall down.
OOC: The goblin fighting Father Zantus is a bit far from your party, separated from you by a horde of villagers, and is not represented in this battle.

Nuko recalls the same information as Jamir about goblins as he drives his axe down upon the third goblin. The creature rolls with the blow, turning it into a glance. His boiled leather appears to have absorbed a good portion of the swing. The goblin retorts by hacking at Nuko with his dogslicer, a blade somewhat like a dagger, but one-sided and with a slight curve to it, almost like a short cutlass. The attack strikes Nuko, but the force of the blow is absorbed by his protective spell. (Defense 13: hit, 3 slashing damage, reduced to 0).

OOC: I should note that mage armor under the Armor as DR rules grants DR 4/armor, not +4 defense, since it grants an armor bonus. By contrast, a shield spell would grant +4 defense because shield bonuses add to defense, not DR. So I recalculated Nuko's defense as a 12 with DR 4/armor. Side note: the result was the same as it would have been under core rules for AC, although the goblin could have rolled high enough on damage to injure Nuko.

The flesh wound stung, but Jamir was made of sterner stuff than what a mere goblin could dish out.

“Don’t worry, my dear, I got this.”

He stepped back out of range of the slashing dogslicer. He drew another javelin from the quiver and charged it with arcane energy. The tip of the shaft glowed with the magic that would allow it to pierce armor.

Jamir flung the pointed weapon at the goblin. The shaft took the little bugger in the gut and the point came out the other side.

The farm girl clapped, "Thank the gods!"

OOC: I have to make a minor correction. Nuko was not completely unscathed by the attack. I had forgotten my own house rule. Damage negated for no other reason than DR based on armor always deals at least 1 point of non-lethal damage. So Nuko takes 1 nonlethal, not 0 damage.

The three goblins are now all unconscious and bleeding FYI, i.e. combat over. I plan to post an update later today. There is still some chaos and in the Cathedral Square, but you have calmed the panic in the immediate area by handling these goblins and may role play the receiving of accolades for the moment and take a couple rounds to recover.
 

"Thanks" Nuko tells Kelvyn for slaying the goblin he was fighting. "Though I wonder what's going on. Goblins like to have numbers on their side, I thought. Let's go see if there are more about."

Jamir moved to retrieve his javelins with a grim look on his face. The three goblins were down and dying, but he felt no sympathy for them. He yanked the javelin from the body in front of him by stepping down with boot on the bugger’s chest as he pulled. He wiped it off on the corpse, struggling to find a clean spot amidst the dirt. He collected the other javelin that missed commenting, “That was well done, Kelvyn. Once again you have proven to be heroic.”

Melanie rushed towards him from behind now that the immediate danger was over and she flung herself into his arms. She was trembling and Jamir had to struggle to free his arm to stow away the javelins so he would have at least one hand free to comfort her.

He murmured, “There, there, lass.”

Then she realized that he had a shallow cut on his leg and let him go, “Oh, you are hurt!”

“Tis nothing, lass. I will be okay.”

Jamir stood still while she tore a strip of clean cloth from her plain dress and wrapped an impromptu bandage around his leg.

He nodded at Nuko’s desire to chase after more of the little buggers and said, “Yeah, there could be more. I wonder where they came from and who let them into the town.”

The north side of the Cathedral Square seems clear of goblins for the moment, and the townsfolk there have begun to calm and follow Father Zantus' instructions to take shelter in the Cathedral. With the help of Sheriff Hemlock and a guard, the goblin by the podium is quickly slain. Zantus places a warding spell upon the main entrance as the townsfolk enter, sprinkling a powder around it with the help of his acolytes (Spellcraft). But the screams in the evening air and the smell of smoke give you pause. This is clearly not an isolated attack.

Sheriff Hemlock spies you, his sword covered in goblin blood, and heads in your direction. "I just slew two myself. But the main force of my guard is set about the gates, ensuring entrants pay their tolls and know the law. I'll need assistance in making sure the Square is clear of these pests. Congratulations. For your valor, you've all been deputized. I'm placing you in charge of the Cathedral Square. I'm off to reinforce the East Gate and kill any goblins along the way. After you finish up here, make for the North Gate to ensure it is secure. May the gods guide your blades and spells."

With that, Sheriff Hemlock and his guard rush off to the south, leaving the Cathedral Square in your hands. There is still a fair bit of confusion, and the southern area of the Square in particular is in quite a lot of disarray.

Kelvyn kneels and quickly wipes the blood from his short blade on a (relatively) clean patch of goblin clothing. Like Jamir, he shows little concern for the goblins' lives. "Bah. These creatures are a nuisance. In small numbers, and against such as you and I, they are of little consequence. But let them come in mass, and they'll have this town razed to the ground in short order." Father Zantus' prayer-craft gets an approving nod as Kelvyn stands. "Looks like the good Father has the townfolk well in hand now. Let's do as the Sheriff asks and clear the square, then we can set about closing the North gate to these buggers."

"All right, folks. The Father Zantus advises people to take shelter in the cathedral. Let's clear the square." Nuko calls out.

He looks troubled. These goblins were attacking and had to be be stopped, but I see the way the humans regard them, as 'pests' in the words of the Sheriff. It is well that they saw me fight for the town, but if these raids continue, there could be mobs calling for 'monster blood' and for slaying 'greenskins', and that seldom ends well for the half-orcs.

Jamir agreed, "Aye, let's get these good folk moving towards the safety of the cathedral."

He started gesturing for the nearest townsfolk to come away from the southern end of the square where things were chaotic. He commented to the pretty farm girl, "Lass you can stick close to me, and I shall protect you."

Melanie looked scared, but so far she had faith in the dapper bard, "Oh, you are so heroic and brave."

Jamir shook his head, "Naw, I am not all that."
"Modest too."
"Huh."

Moving with Kelvyn, a step behind and to the left, Jamir commented in a low voice, "Twould appear I am bringing along my own cheering section."
