Just heard from a book store distributor that the latest icV2 that was given out at Comicon this past weekend has Pathfinder in the #1 spot for Q2. Can't find a link on the web yet, but I figure that will be coming shortly.

And before this post erupts another round of edition wars, it really doesn't matter one iota. Paizo isn't going to do one thing differently whether we are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 85th. If we are happy with our sales, we are happy with our sales, whether an industry magazine recognizes that or not. Same goes for WotC. Nobody there is hanging out on the internet waiting for that list to hit. They either are happy with their numbers of they aren't. icV2 and their listing won't change anything.

Play the game you want to play. That is all that matters.

OK, perhaps I can revel in this just a wee bit? Just a bit?

OK, I'm done. Back to your regularly scheduled RPG talks.

Just a wee bit. I'll let you buy me a drink.

You done good, Lisa.

...it really doesn't matter one iota.

I disagree - I think it does matter a bit. Just like an ENnie or Origins nomination/award, it's both a validation of the work you and your employees have put in and it's a small (ok, maybe very small) marketing tool to use.

So...congrats!

You can revel all you like. The numbers mean whatever the numbers mean, but still, you have something to be proud of with Pathfinder and Paizo regardless of what the numbers are. You should be proud of that and enjoy it! I know I'm proud for you, and I very much am glad you are putting out the products you are.

My preference for Paizo and Pathfinder should be no secret, but still, this really is a big deal on some level. This sort of thing just... doesn't happen very often.

I choose to view it as "Way to go Paizo!" rather than kicking D&D, however. They took a company that had to make some very scary and short solutions and turned it into one of the most successful RPG companies out there.

That is the story here, not how well or poorly D&D is doing at any given time. That is the story that is interesting to hear, and the one that I hope people can enjoy regardless of their gaming preferences.

Everyone loves an underdog succeeds when no one thought they could story, don't they?

So, enjoy your games everyone. Congratulations for what success you have, and remember we're all playing the same hobby here and we have more in common than we ever have different.

Yeah, this is how I view it as well. Even if Paizo were no.2 it wouldn't matter really. I'm enjoying running my COTCT game and I'm enjoying Paizo's output. As a result that's where my money is going. Trust me when I say that if I had more in the way of disposable income I'd be spending more on Paizo product out side of my two subscriptions (AP and RPG) and the cards and maps I buy from my LGS.

This isn't a surprise to me. Afterall, WotC is a gaming company, and Paizo is a marketing firm.

I'll be impressed when Paizo actually writes a game instead of cashing in on someone else's work and duping a gullible demographic into buying a game that they already owned out of pure spite. By the way, I'm aware that Pathfinder's SRD is online for free, which really only shows how dumb and easily manipulated the people who had bought the core books actually are. I wonder if they burn half of their paychecks for the hell of it.

I really don't like 4E at all...I find the combat rules that everyone touts to be an excruciating, ponderous experience. But at least they TRIED to do something different, whereas Pathfinder is just 3.blech with a few minor modifications and some new artwork. Really they're a bunch of disingenuous twats who happen to be savvy in realizing that their fanbase are a bunch of basement cases with personality disorders and exactly how to stroke their egos (fake playtests, :):):):):):):):) online pandering, and stealth edition warmongering like the CEO's post above) in order to maximize doe-eyed, puppy dog-esque devotion among the high functioning autistics that can actually stand to PLAY the game.

On the subject of Paizo fans, and this is a tangent...really these were culled from the absolute worst that 3rd edition had to offer. I mean, they really are :):):):):):):)s. And it's not that they are :):):):):):):)s because they happen to play Pathfinder, it's that Pathfinder/3.x is the kind of game that could only be truly enjoyed by :):):):):):):)s. Given their obvious personality flaws, the fact that they were so easily hornswoggle dout of their money by Paizo, and the fact that the majority of their gaming experience is composed of pawing at sourcebooks with sweaty hands while locked up in a basement all alone, I kind of regard Paizo players in the same way that I regard registered sex offenders that are forced to announce themselves at my door by the courts.

So Paizo managed to outsell WotC by being a bunch of underhanded weasels and cashing in on the work of others. Well congrats to them. Of course, the really funny part is that if they ever try to come out with a new edition, half of their fanbase will just jump ship when one of THEIR 3rd Party developers puts out a clone based on the PF SRD. That's assuming that Lisa Stevens doesn't just accept the first buy out offer she gets and run off with the money, leaving Pathfinder's gullible-ass fans in the dust, which is the likelier scenario.

In short, I would be impressed if it were Green Ronin, or Fantasy Flight Games, or Margaret Weiss Productions, or Evil Hat Productions, or any company that actually writes GAMES that managed to beat out WotC. Instead, it was an unscrupulous marketing firm selling someone else's effort to a bunch of aspies who make purchasing decisions with their emotions instead of their brains. The people at Paizo really are just conniving scum bags and I hope any success they enjoy in this hobby is fleeting.
