Herolab? It's official, up to date and painless, and on sale for 15 bucks right now on Loot!
Sorry, the sale's already over, looks like.

I really don't like programs that try to rush sales like it appears that Loot does. The hard sell annoys the heck out of me. First day, and I am already canceling my subscription.

The Auld Grump

*EDIT* Ah yes, I had forgotten that Herolabs is 'Buy piecemeal and spend more!' driven in regards to Pathfinder. Bah!

Frankly, the DDi is a better deal than that.

Sorry about getting your hopes up and then the sale being over, that sucks. I should have doubled checked.

The piecemeal approach vs a monthly fee thing is a tricky question. They have to pay someone to add new content and code to the program. I don't particularly like to rent software but the piecemeal thing adds up quickly.

What tools do you actually get with the DDI subscription? From the outside some of the tools look like they are charging for the equivalent of the pathfinder srd site. The compendium description is "Gain full access to the complete rules text for every race, class, paragon path, epic destiny, skill, feat, power, item, and ritual" and the adventure builder looks like a tool for viewing monster stats? Does it have a slick interface that makes it easier to use than an html site?

Not anymore.

And, even if it were on sale, getting all of the available Pathfinder content runs you a cool $105 (in reality, $120 since it's not actually on sale), with another $10 tacked on if you want to get ahold of the data for Ultimate Combat when it comes out.

Access to the full-featured DDI character builder? $10 per month. Oh, and that gets you everything else that DDI comes with, too.

Yup, with all the bells and whistles purchased all at once it is pricy. There's no denying that. I wish they could find a way to lower the price. I've made do by avoiding the superfluous packages and just adding anything I wanted for a character by hand, which is a nice option.

But, it does exist and it is official.

So in a year to 13 months hero lab is the better deal!!!

You'd have to factor in the value of the dungeon and dragon and other bundled tools, and Dannager was being generous to Hero Lab by using the monthly fee for DDi not the 1 year subscription price. On the flip side you also have to factor in the owning vs renting thing and the risk of the subscription service disappearing at some point, or the risk of hero lab becoming obsolete (if say ipads start to cost 50 bucks or those lcd gaming tables become common) etc... etc..

Not in the longterm, and you actually own the program and your characters instead of renting both.
