Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

You mean, like that picture in the 1st ed PHB promised all those years ago?

:D

Yes, yes, exactly! The whole point of the old school Paladin was that you had to be nice to be everyone, you didn't get to keep the shiny, but when it came to the struggle against the legions of evildom, you kicked a*se.

YMMV :)

We will likely do some other classes based on other alignments in due time (the anti-paladin comes to mind), but for this release we decided to stick to our roots.

And I'm personally grateful for that... :)

LG paladins that can detect evil are part of D&D for me. (IMHO, YMMV, etc...)

See, this is something I've never understood. For me, the cleric has always been the big member of his/her church. The paladin is LG first, part of a church second - their dedication is to being the classic chivalrious knight, and while that does include religion, that's not all it's about.

I can see an anti-paladin, a paragon of evil, if you will, yes, but a neutral or unaligned paladin? At least speaking for me personally, that goes against everything paladins are supposed to be about. Paladins are about passion, about being a part of a driving force dedicated to Good to rid the world of evil (Or good, for the anti-paladin ;p). Mind you, that doesn't mean they're ALL MARTIAL ALL THE TIME - the paladin has Diplomacy as a skill for a reason.

I more or less agree with this, which is a large part of why I allow the alternate Paladins in UA. Paladins of CG, CE, and LE make certain amount of sense. One of the most fun my game's had involved a Paladin of Freedom (CG) with issues with authority. :)

A cleric is a person that has decided to serve the gods.

A paladin is a person that the gods have decided to serve them.

This I think was the fundamental difference between a paladin and a cleric.

In a way, this is the problem since it required the OTHER players to understand what it meant. This wasn't some yokel that decided to make the clergy his calling.

This is a guy who the freaking creators of everything the pcs should hold dear have said "this is my champion on the mortal plane".

(It's why I never agree with Roy's retort of Miko in Oots - "just because you're a paladin doesn't mean you get to boss us around", er Roy, that's EXACTLY what it means)

I always remember Elizabeth Moon's "Deeds of Paks (best paladin EVER) and nobody who wasn't EVIL to the core would backtalk a paladin in that world - that's just not done at all....

It happened a good bit actually. The druid, for instance. The Duke for another. People didn't listen to them because they were powerful or because they were the chosen of the Gods, they followed them out of respect and admiration.

That's actually part of the point of the novel. Elizabeth Moon wrote it after getting annoyed at people playing Paladins as Lawful Stupid pushy jerks who used their abilities to bully others.

If we're talking about fictional characters, wouldn't Michael and the other Knights of the Swords from the Dresden Files series essentially be paladins? Granted, they got by mostly due to the NG/CG-ness of Dresden...

A minor correction to your above message. The Pathfinder Bonus Bestiary contains an incomplete listing of the monsters in the final bestiary

Bonus Bestiary said:Below is an incomplete listing of the 300+ monsters compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game appearing in this preview and in the Pathfinder Bestiary, releasing September 2009.

The Bonus Bestiary contains 13 creatures (1 creature per page), listed below:

  • Allip
  • Ant Lion
  • Ascomoid
  • Axe Beak
  • Caryatid Column
  • Dragon, Faerie
  • Dragonne
  • Hag, Annis
  • Huecuva
  • Lammasu
  • Naga, Water
  • Nixie
  • Shadow Mastiff
The entries are laid out in a format that reminds me of a mixture of the 2nd Edition Monster Manual entries and Third Edition Monster manual entries that takes some of the best features of both and is much easier to read and use.
