Man I love the Payment of Writers thread with it's frankness, so i have to ask the same thing regarding Artists. How much should a starting artist get for say, 1/4 A4 B&W or an A4 cover?
I have always found that pricing the art on its published size is a little unfair.
I believe artists should work at a size that they are comfortable with, and receive a flat rate per piece. It doesn't cost the artist any less of their valuable time to produce the piece if the publisher decides to resize it.
It all depends on the size of the company and the artist doing the work. $100/page is a fairly standard price ($25/quarter page, $50/half page). In my experience it's easier for an artist to live off of freelancing than authors.
Could you please? I'm just curious, since I'm married to my publisher, Cthuluftaghn, from 'GrellHead Studios'. Maybe if I knew more about the going rates, I could renegotiate his payments to me, lol....
Seriously though, if anyone other than husband and friends wanted anything done, not sure where to begin on charging?
