PayPal: Is it safe?

I was going to possibly sign-up to paypal tonight, but then I happened to notice the "Paypal Class Action Lawsuit" topic here. Now I'm a little afraid of giving them my bank account information. What is the deal with PayPal, those of you that use it? Is it reliable? Have you been ripped off? The reason I am asking is because I want to order some stuff online, but I don't use credit cards. If Paypal has a not so good rep, then I guess I'll just borrow somebody else's credit card and just pay them lol. :\

The OLD paypal I wouldn't trust further than I can comfortably spit a rat. They closed a $50 account on me and never reoppened it, and kept misreading my address as being California instead of Canada - thus I cannot unlock the account.

HOWEVER.

The new paypal, since the eBay takeover, I trust.

It works for me, and I haven't heard a single nasty story about it since the takeover (although the takeover was DIRTY and borderline illegal, IMO).

Yes, I feel it is safe to use. I've used my account to move thousands of dollars around in the past eight months.
