PCGen/GMGen

I am considering downloading this program.

Can anyone guide me in how it is compatable with OpenRPG, our setting, etc.? Is it stand-alone or does it produce nodes for OpenRPG? What are your experiences with it? Any information will help.

I was fooling around with this program about a year or two ago. My goal was to create a database that people in T13K could install to create characters based on our setting. In addition the program would create an XML file compatible with OpenRPG.

I had little success. This may not be the fault of the program though. It may be a reflection on my knowing just enough about modern programming to REALLY screw up a computer. From what I could see these goals were achievable. It would require more time to work on it that I had available.

I have successfully added my campaign info to PCGen, but it was a tedious process. However, I know there is help available from the PCGen forums, but didn't bother to ask for it (I'm stupid like that). I was able to add a custom class, custom magic items (and a whole new magic item type) and new feats. These new items appear in the UI as a separate source that you can load, just like those from the various publishers.

PCGen is a great program, IMO, but I do find the hassle of adding new material to be a bar to entry. If you want any specific help, let me know, or stop in at their forums.

Thanks for the input.

I take it, without modification, it is basically a stand-alone program that can enhance DMing/Playing, OpenRPG or no.

Right. It's a full-featured character generator that does a lot of the work for you. It includes data files for a few expansions for free, and they will sell you more if you want them. As I said, you can create your own data files as well, but it's kind of a hassle.

It also includes game-time GMing tools to help you manage combat and stuff, but I haven't used those much. It's not intended for online play or anything, but could be just as useful in those situations as for regular tabletop play.

I actually removed the PCs in my game from it recently because they started taking prestige classes that I don't have the data for. I still use it extensively for my NPCs though.
