PCs changing the campaign world

Since the consensus seems to be its a Good Thing to allow change to a campaign, here's a question. What is everyone's oppinion about the changes made in one campaign spilling over into future campaigns? If the PCs change the face of Faerun in some small or large way, then you decide to start up another game in Faerun, will all of those changes still be in place?

If it's fun, use it. If it would be more fun to play in FR the way it is presented, do that.

While I tend to be a homebrewer, I think that the PCs should be allowed to violate canon in a setting -- if that provides the most fun to them and a DM. Ultimately, the game is about fun. So, if theplayers say that their PCs truly want to wipe out the Scarlet Brotherhood in the World of Greyhawk or the Cult of the Dragon in the Forgotten Realms, then let them try. If they triumph, they will have had many hard-earned victories and become legends in the campaign -- possibly inspiring new PCs later on. Also, a sense of accomplishment is important to players. So, I see nothing wrong with violating canon.

I think you shouldn't really allow canon to change accidentally. If the players unintentionally do something that could change canon, allow the canon to "regenerate".

No way! Accidents on the part of the PCs are one of the things that makes GMing fun! So if the PCs mess up spectacularly, the repercussions should be spectacular, too...

In one Shadowrun campaign, the PCs were storming the hideout of a doomsday cult that was sitting on a major mana line. When they massacred everyone except for a few scientists in the lab, they heard a voice on the intercom:

"I know that this is terribly cliche, but I have a nuclear bomb in here with me. I have just started a one-hour countdown, and I am the only one who knows how to stop it. So if you don't leave right now, it will explode!"

They decided this was a bluff, soon learned that it wasn't, and instead of trying to disarm it and accidentally setting it off, they decided to flee and hide behind the next few hills.

The bomb exploded, and, since it was enchanted, blew a major hole into the Earth's manasphere and allowed massive hordes of undead spirits to enter Earth. And since the manaline in question was part of a network of dragon lines encompassing the Pacific Ocean, there were massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions all around the Pacific Rim, with many thousands of deaths and truly spectacular devastation.

I'll never forget the looks on the faces of the players... ;)

In summary: Forget canon. Even accidents can have huge repercussions, and this is something that the PCs and players should learn soon and hard.

it's good to have goals

For a second I almost thought you might be one of those WH*TE W*LF GOTH POSEURS, but then sanity prevailed and I realised that a deadly, bloodsucking creature of the night called "Herpes Cineplex"... no.

Hong "now a deadly, bloodsucking creature of the night called hong, that's something else" Ooi
