Riiiiigggghhhhhhtttttt....

Call me a Doubting Thomas if you must, but to say you've *never* cheated, not even a little bit? That's quite a claim...

You, sir, are a Doubting Thomas.

Do you want me to say "Cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye" or something? :)

I've never cheated. Statement of fact. Games would lose all enjoyment for me if I did cheat. I doubt I am the only person that's never cheated, either. Therefore, your "Everybody does it" defence of cheating does not work because not everybody does it. (It also does not work because two wrongs do not make a right, but that is not my main point right now).

Back on topic, I hope that the original poster's cheating companion reforms and never cheats again. Best of luck!

Best Troll ever.

I give it 6 out of 5 stars. A must read for all true troll lovers. ;)

D'oh! :)

If it is a troll, I fell for it. I guess I've been out of practice watching for them since the retirement of the King of All Trolls, Bugaboo.

I could be wrong but the "cry for help" bit and the "group prayer" bit were just too much for me.

Nahh - I thought exactly the same thing. I could be wrong, too, but it's a lot funnier if I'm right.

You may be right, cheating at D&D is a pretty pathetic cry for help, maybe he should of faked a suicide attempt or something (or at least a in-character suicide attempt). Either we are not getting a full story here or we are not getting a real story here, either way it makes for a good thread.

Let's say a player is found to have been using a "cheater's" icosahedron die that has an extra 20 instead of a 1. We don't know how long he's been avoiding fumbles and upping his odds of nat crits. He appologized, but didn't seem very sincere.

Is one week of exile from the gaming table a fair punishment, or should we push for more?

Cut off his hands; then he'll have to roll dice by spitting them out of his mouth... :D

It really depends on the group dynamic... in my group, I'd just smack the player around (literally) and tell him not to do it again. If it was persistent, I might just ask him to not play anymore.

I just finally realized what was said, and how insulting it is that anyone here would laugh at prayer.
Thanks so much.

Hmmm... I don't think anyone was laughing at the idea of prayer as your group's solution so much as feeling that the quick turn around might indicate that it was not a sincere thread. I could be wrong, of course, but to each their own and likely not worth going into too deeply lest perhaps the discussion veer toward off-limit topics. Long as it worked out for your group, I'm happy for you. :)

BVB: Yep. If you'd said "meditate" or "think", it would have been fine, but if you say "pray", someone is going to get uncomfortable, and then they're going to attack you.

Side note:

Someone here posted a great way to deal with a cheater. As I recall, the DM talked with the other players, and they all agreed that NOTHING the cheater's character did would ever matter.

Example:

Party attacks an ogre. The DM knows that it has 24 hit points.

Cheater: I attack it. Yeah, Natural 20, and hey, it's a crit, too! I do 45 points damage!

DM: Good, good, next?

Actual player: I attack -- 19 total, 14 points damage.

DM: (actually marks off damage) Your sword scrapes across the ogre's shin.

Cheater: Oh, hey, I forgot my haste attack. Hey, another 20! 36 points damage!

DM: uh-huh. Next?

Other player: I attack -- AC23, for 12 points damage.

DM: Aaaaand the ogre goes down.

Over time, the player slowly realizes that he's having no effect on the gameworld. He never brings a creature down. He never affects the plot. All he can do is roll that big fake 20 over and over again, since that's all he seems to care about.

The DM can also "save time" by rolling the cheater's saves himself -- "The Medusa glares balefully at the cheater, who abruptly turns to stone."

Cheater: But I get a save!

DM: Oh, I rolled it for you. What's your Fort?

Cheater: Um, +12? Yeah! +12!

DM: Wow, I thought it was +14, and you still missed it. Better luck once you're revived, eh?
