Penny Arcade takes on DDO

Having read the comic, and the associated writing about it, I'm still not entirely certain what point they're trying to make. They seem to be saying that DDO has its work cut out for it because its competing against WoW, but even then my reaction is, "So?"

If that's Penny Arcade's point, what's the significance of it?

I think the point is that the DDO design team is giving too little, too late, and not too many people care anymore.

I took it as a jab at them doing anything to try to get folks to play.

Except, since it's from the Penny Arcade, it's done in their dull humorless style...

Making fun of WOTC for giving the Monty Haulers more ways to be kewl and rich, it sounds like.

Very much a grognard complaint, implying the whole dumbing down thesis.

This one was funnier until I read their reasoning, when all I had to go by is my innate prejudice against DDO.

My best friend is actually one of those sad fools who plays the game.

It doesn't have to be particularly "significant" - it's just a comic, man.

That strip reminded me of the bribes SOE was offering ex-SWG players to re-activate their accounts. I had all kinds of neat stuff: a speederbike, a house full of objects d'art, even a space yacht! The game still didn't have any content, though, so I didn't stay long. :\

I don't think their style is "dull and humorless" - instead, their humor is simply very different and off-kilter when compared to other, more conventional gag comics. And that's refreshing. I mean, I don't get many of their gaming jokes (since I don't play many computer and no video games), but I often find them hilarious nevertheless.

Some things are considered cult for a reason.
