Permanency

Are there any rules anywhere regarding using permanency on spells other than those listed in the spell description? For instance, if I want to permanently cast prestidigitation on myself, are there guidelines for the XP cost of something like that?

Or is it just physically impossible to cast other spells with permanency w/o the adjudication of a DM?

I agree with dcollins but note that spells outside the core rules should say if they can be made permanent and, if so, will provide an XP cost. The danger in not following the list in the PH is that using permanency is pretty much like creating a magical item, something the DM should have control over. For instance, you should not be able to make something like cure minor wounds permanent without the DM knowing about. Even then, if the DM allows it remove his DMing license.

I thought spell effects from instantanious spells were permanent already... or is my cure minor wounds going to wear off? :uhoh:

It's all GM. I like the "Permanent" prestiditation spell, but you could always just research a version that lasts 1 hour per level as a first level spell (Doesn't seem too unreasonable or powerful) and save your exp.

I think they mean to indicate spells along the lines of Vigor.

My question is why can't you make the first table (arcane sight- toungues) apply to anyone instead of just the 'caster'. I mean the first thing I'd want to do with permanency is give everyone in my party Darkvision.

Aside from that, why doesn't the Druid or cleric or even bard have access to the Permanancy ability? Say I want to make detect chaos permanent?
It is always up to the DM but concentration spells ( such as detect, which you would still have to take an action to concentrate) and ones that have very long durations like endure elements (24 hours) are more likely to get the go.
If your asking for something higher than a secound level spell it's a lot less likely to go

Granted if you had 5 member's of your party who don't have darkvision it would be a third of your exp to 11th level. (lowest you can cast it is tenth) But chances are you have a dwarf or a half-orc in your party and possibly a item that grants darkvision, so your down to a possible 2000exp instead of 5000exp

And the value. At least if your DM is a stickler for lighting. Ah the sneaking an killing. Plus not having to make all those pesky potions or casting light spells, which draw monsters like flies.
Ah spelunking without the torch.
