Well, "There ain't no one there" *does* sound better....
The fact that you are quite correct scares me. It seems that even redneck imbeciles would benefit from that rule.

My honest pet peeve, though, are people who type "noone". I'm sorry, but "noon" has no "e" in it.

I'm going to have to add that to my list.

Because my RL job involves writing and editing, I've compiled a rather long list, you see... for example, a recent entry has to do with (erroneously) substituting "vice" for "versus," something that just confuses the living heck out of me. I can only assume that this error comes to us via "vice versa." It's especially confusing coming from people who have been writing and using English longer than I've been alive....

Two of my biggest language peeves:

"I could care less." They're just telling me that they do care. That it is possible to care less than they care. The phrase is "I couldn't care less."

"Irregardless." It just isn't a word.

OH! I just thought of another. Well, it's more of an accent peeve.

People who pronounce "wolf" as "woof". Like nails on a chalkboard. A werewolf would frighten me. A werewoof is just silly.

Oh come on, awful grammar, childish spelling errors and mispronunciations are all useful signs that a particular person's ideas or opinions might not be all that useful.

It might sound snobbish, (if a Brit can't sound snobbish then who can?) but we are constantly rating and testing our thoughts and views against the views of the people we interact with. If I bump into an opinion forwarded by someone/body who has reached their 20s without learning to use an apostrophe properly I usually take it with a pinch of salt.

All that said, I think people should need a license before using the word 'literally'.

There ain't nobody thar.
There ain't no one thar.

As one of the aforementioned redneck imbeciles, I would like to state for the record that there are quite a few reasonably intelligent folks who have on occasion used those phrases to flavor their particular speech in a regional manner. Just because we don't let proper english get in the way of a good, warm colloquialism doesnt necessarily mean we're stupid or imbecilic, but it sure does amuse us when uptight fancy-talkin' folk assume that. And then ask how much their car repairs are going to be. :D

That's when we usually are morally obligated to say something like "Saaay thar feller, you ain't frum aroun' har, are ya?"

EDIT: Then scratch something, i.e. belly, ear, butt, etc. That part is really optional, but can add significantly to the effect.

I mean, it's in the redneck imbecile handbook and everything. :)

Seriously, one of my pet peeves is when someone tries to use an obscure or outdated saying and does it incorrectly without even remotely knowing what it is meant to convey, like "I'll be waiting here with baited breath...".

The "I could care less" example given above really gets me, because *that* one should be obvious.

Homophone misuse grinds my gears pretty badly also, in particular "loose" vs. "lose".

I just flinch when I read stuff like that, and try to ignore it, because most people aren't like me and have a trivia-like affinity for the root meanings of words that they use in daily speech.

Of course, what gets me the most is when I slip up and do one of those things myself, then read it later and just groan at my own carelessness :)

I'm appalled at the number of people on this thread who are clearly homophonic. This is the 21st Century guys, a bit of tolerance is required.

Sorry, I just can't help it. Homeopathic medicine has the same effect on me <shudders>

:D
