Petition: Extend the Cease Fire!

Would you like the moderators to extend the version war cease fire?

If not now, when?

At what point will the community be "ready" for frank discussion on the comparative merits of the editions and how on earth will we know that fact without discussing the issue directly?

Are these cease fires are a stealth ban on the topic all together? Are you willing to vote for that?

Note: I'm not an advocate for either side on this topic.

Maybe when it no longer is an "edition war"? When people really talk about individual merits and flaws of a system and discuss constructively about them? No talk about dumbing down nor talk about boring or ridicilously overpowered or what else. When people don't speak in absolutes any more, but keep things in relation?

I don't know if we will ever get there, or if the "edition war" phase is actually required to get there.

But personally I think the edition war mentality is just a temporary thing, because people have to cope with the change and fear that their move to a new edition is not accepted and they will be lone adopters of a system dying in its infancy, or think they will be the only ones still playing the "old" game, ending up with fewer and fewer people to play with and tons of expensive products that never really got used.

In a few months, the dust has settled. We'll know where everyone stands and what places the edition has changed. We know if we're comfortable with our choices (and why - if ever - we changed our opinions and decisions we might have had). In a few month, we know if or how our emotional and monetary investments have payed off.

That's not an edition war (read the sticky). Edition wars are "3E sucks, and kills puppies" vs. "4E kicked my grandmother!"

That's what you can do in Circvs Maximvs, can't you? It's not EN World, but most of the "crew" there are EN Worlders.
Some may want to discuss editions in detail and rationally, without the random insult part. CM is fun and all, but may not be the best place for that.

I doubt you will see that before one side has driven the other off.

I wouldn't expect random insults. They will probably well placed and hit where it hurts - and obvious. But "Edition Warriors" probably don't like that happening to them, no matter which edition they stand for. But maybe it's actual the only way to keep people reasonable and discuss rationally, instead of overly emotional with hidden or not-so hidden insults against people with different opinions/play-styles or game preferences.

I doubt you will see that before one side has driven the other off.
Then so be it. But I don't believe that's neccessary.

Since most of the polls show between 50:50 and 1/3 : 2/3 4e adoption at the moment then driving one side off is not a realistic option for either side (not that logic will stop some people from trying :( )

I personally would keep the ceasefire in place for a few months yet. people can still discuss the editions but the ceasefire is a good rule to keep threads civil until we can get back to the freindly, actively moderated site that Enworld was before the 4e fireworks went off!

The problem isn't the edition wars, the problem is that people who purposefully try to stir flames aren't dealt with.

There is some truth in that. Some people fan the flames, because they feel theirs is the best edition. But that is not necessarily a problem, as almost anyone who knows Diaglo would attest.

The problem, I suspect, is the sheer scale of posts in that contentious vein about this particular edition, at this moment.

The really funny thing is, that in itself is testimony to the quality of 3e and 4e.

Yours, sticking with 3e...
