Maybe it's my dad hat talking, but when I first saw this thread I did a double-take because I mistakenly read it as "Phineous and Ferb".
We min-maxed these to hell and high water when we played Hackmaster, but then that's generally how you are supposed to play Hackmaster.
In our last 3.5 campaign we had an Archivist PC who was a professor of theology. When we bought 5e when it came out we were looking at backgrounds and noted that that character had basically all of the flaws listed under Scholar.
I still haven't found BIFT's all that relevant to my table, from a 5e perspective, but then, even my newer players tend to have a good idea on how to build well-rounded characters for the most part. None have dabbled in any phobias that I've noticed so far, though.
