Photographing Miniatures

Andrew D. Gable

First Post
I wanna take some pictures of my miniatures, and slap 'em up on here.

I don't have a digicam. Will it work to just use a regular camera and scan the pics in?
What sorta background, etc, should I use?
How about lighting?
Any other advice?

A difficult subject. There are several articles on coolminiornot in the Articles section covering different aspects of photography. Some of them deal with using computer tools such as Photoshop to fix common photography problems, others talk about useful stuff like lighting. Here are the titles for reference:

Color Balancing
Quick Fix for Adobe User's
How to REALLY Take Good Photos
Brightness and Gamma Correction
Photography: Good Tripod for Mini-Shooting
Scanning
Photographing minis with just one lamp
Digital camera photography

please post a link to this site I also have a hard time photgraphing mini's.
I am also not clear on how to post pictures of them here. Do I need myown website to post?

At the bottom of the Reply window is a box marked "Attach File". Use this to post pictures. Note the 250K limit on size. You do not need a separate host.

This is a picture of an Elf from Games workshop. He served me as a player Character for a number of years.
I painted him about 8yrs ago or so ....around 1994 or 1995.

Enjoy,
Darius

Not to take away from your pic, or anything, but you really shouldn't highjack someone's thread. You should probably start your own and leave this one for discussion of using cameras to take pics for online. I'm sure you'll get plenty of feedback on your figs cause it looks like you do really nice work, IMO. :)

Sorry that was the first picture I ever took of a mini....just wanted to say hey i did it....

Thanks Mark, I am going to start my own thread when my batteries get recharged.
Took 5 pictures and this was the only one that turned out good.
Really not trying to hijack a thread at all. I was just following the instructions to see if they would work. I will earase the picture if that would make you happy.

Thanks,
Darius

I was taking pictures, but my camera would focus on anything but the fig. No matter where I moved the fig, it came out blurry and something else was crisp. I have been too lazy to read how to manually override the auto focus. Anyway a friend of mine told me to put a white 3x5 card in fron of the fig, focus on the card, remove the card and quickly snap the photo. He used to photo jewelry and said it worked great. I have not tried it, but my next photo session, I will see if it helps.

I only had this problem if shooting from straight on. If I shoot from a top angle, it does not happen.
