PI question: underdark

Fester

First Post
Hi folks,

Okay, this may just be silly, but I really can't work it out.

Is the term "underdark" owned by WotC (or someone else), or is it fair use?

It certainly isn't a generic term, so if I wanted to use it in a printed product, would I be legal in doing so?

Any opinions and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

IANAL.

I think "underdark" is specific enough to stay away from. There ought to be plenty of other words you can use that will convey the same image -- Deepdark, Deepearth, Underearth, Everdark, The Icky Space Under the Stairs....

Cheers
Nell.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, guys.

I've decided not to take any chances and have erradicated the term from the work. I didn't come up with a single term, though quite liked the Everdark, which I may use :D

Anyway, thanks again.

It's always best to err on the side of caution on these things. I believe "Underdark" is a WotC property, however. I also believe Goodman got special permission to use it. However, IANAL and I could be just flat wrong on those two counts. It is still best to be careful... especially where a 600 lb. gorilla is concerned :)
