Picking a deity for a non-cleric PC

For me, it depends on the character.

Race and culture play their part, but the greatest influence for me is character concept. I also tend to clear any deity choices with the DM first, to make sure I'm not about to annoy him too severely :>

What is most important in picking a non-cleric deity/religion

I try to match alignment

I try to match race/pick racial deities first

I try to pick to class/profession (rogue gods, magic gods)

I pick based on cultural aspects (family lineage, community)

I pick the most prevalent/important deity in the campaign

I pick based on "crunch" aspects (cool PrCs or feats)

I pick based on the rest of the party (the PC cleric, etc)

I never pick a religion for non-clerics (and sometime not even clerics)
