I proposed a western game to my players a few months ago, and not a one of them liked the idea. Whoever said it was right, if it's in your own backyard...:)

I said it on this thread, and based some of it stories I heard when I used to hang around Middle Age clubs. The ones where you all chip in on a camp site, put on some garb and have your own private ren faire once a month. :)

They told me that Cowboys and Indians clubs are much more popular than Middle Ages in Europe, then again I suppose anyone who would join such a club would just volunteer at the local Tourist Board. :)

Later as a newspaper reporter in Dodge City, Kan., I did a story about a British club that rides around in RVs and then sets up a cowboy town on the weekend, complete with buring buldings at the end of the day. Dodge City sends them some nice souveniers from the Boot Hill Museum every year. The club uses the gifts as prizes for contests at their events.

your local gameshop owner is a moron. but don't take it personally, just about every gameshop owner is a moron. some are marginal morons, but to some degree they all are.

as an aside, i called my local gameshop and asked about the codex mysterium from sovereign stone...

him: "it's not coming out till fall 2002".

me: *sigh* i know it's available because i can order it through several online stores. can YOU order it for me?

him: "well, if our distributor has it i can order it for you".

me: *sigh* very well.

i swear, some of these guys just dare you to take your money out of the community. oh well, i press on....continuing to support erratic local gameshops, when places like talon and ohmygames exist.

but getting back on point - rumors like the one your local store owner is starting CAN hurt business on a local level. then, if those rumors are swirled on an internet message board...well, you get the idea.

string this yahoo upside down and give him the bastinado with a copy of the deadlands rulebook.

Many local RPG shop owners are total morons...
That's my sad experience. In Madrid (Spain), Nantes, Paris and Brest (France), I've seen many FLGS and most of their owners and clerks are morons. Uninformed morons. Sad :(

So why are we supposed to support our FLGS again?

I don't know... I don't support it right now. I support my Friendly Internet Game Shop (hey, Talon, that's you!)...

Because we need to boost local economy, especially after 9-11. I'd rather my money be spent in Hawaii than other places. No offense intended.

That's what the internet is for: New product information, so I can tell the local store owner what I want to order.

Sorry, but if the FLGS manager is a jerk who ignores almost everything about d20 because he likes CCG and Warhammer (way bigger profit) I don't think he deserves being supported. If I want to support local economy, I buy fruits and vegetables in the Friendly Local Grocery, and it help ecvnomy, but I won't wait two months for an hypotetical release of my favorite RPG supplement in the jerk's Not So FLGS...

YMMV, of course!

That's why you don't go into business as a fan who wants first dib at new products at your liking but as a businessperson that services the customers FIRST.

Trust me, I've had my fair share of game store morons in Hawaii, but it balances out with those who knows a thing about customer service. The ones who go out of his way to treat me as their customer gets my money.

But, for example, here in Brest, with 200.000 people living around, there are only one game store, and the owner/manager is only interested in Warhammer and CCG. He don't even know most of d20 (or RPG in general) products.

I've tried a thousand times:
-Hey, man, when are you going to have product x? (for example Dragonstar)
-Product x? What is that?
-A wonderful new d20 product!
-I've never heard of it, it must have been cancelled. Why don't you buy the new Warhammer book?

Then I feel sorry for the gamers in Brest (except for Warhammer and CCG fans).

Obviously he has a monopoly in Brest and can pretty much sell what he wants to sell. So in the great business tradition: give him a competition. If anyone thinking of starting a business, get your business degree and come back to Brest and open up a gaming store that will cater to EVERYONE, not just Warhammer and CCG fans.

That first game store owner will quickly realize he has to do more to stay in business, especially if the new game store is stealing his customers.
