No, every type of character can be useful. If you want to play, there are several natural opportunities to add a new character to the mix (including someone who just got washed off the Tarantula in the storm) pretty soon.

Great, thanks. The random generator gave me a Dinghy as equipment (and my background has Calvin deserting the military, so that could be the route). If its not able to fit into the story, I'll swap it out.
