Rowland “Safari” Catcloghe

Forgetting that there was a second skeleton, Safari lets his guard down for but a second. His enemy lunges at him, but is distracted by the sudden appearence of Philip, Safari's pet monkey, screaming and spitting at the undead abomination. The strike goes wide.

((Defense. d20 roll = 15 + 0, so Safari escapes the attack))

Consisting of little more than skin and bones himself, Burn nimbly dodges the swing of the second skeleton's weapon.

((Defense. Rolled 18 + 3 = 21, so success))

Safari, the Leperchaun, Bautista and Adelheid each manage to cut down one of their attackers. But there's no shortage of attackers on the deck of the Tarantula.

The sky is almost completely black now as the storm intensifies well beyond the level of any natural storm, or even a hurricane. The only light comes from eye searing flashes of blue lightning and the St. Elmo's fire flickering across the skeletons' forms.

The rolling deck is slick with seawater and blood as members of the crew are cut down left and right. The skeletal behemoth sends lifeless body after lifeless body hurtling off the deck, into the black waters. But other mariners who are cut down rise jerkily to their feet, taking up arms to then turn on their former crewmates, a flickering blue light in their eyes.

Captain Davies is yelling something to his crew, but it's impossible to hear over the din.

((Next round of combat, people. If anyone dies, DM me and we'll talk about what comes next. The normal skeletons do d6 damage with their attacks.))

As the skeleton falls into the sea, The Leperchaun turns to the next opponent but he only manages a glancing blow.

Burn Tokwith

Frantically Tokwith parries the blades of the undead fiends, beaten back by their relentless offensive. Unable to land a blow himself, he howls in pain as a cutlass slips through to gash his shoulder.

Attack: 12 - 2 = 10 (miss)

Defense #1: 18 + 3 = 21 (success)
Defense #2: 4 + 3 = 7 (fail) for 1 damage

Adelheid attacks, but in her panic both of her blows are way off the mark. The first skeleton counter-attacks and scores a deadly hit that pierces her armor... With a whimper she falls to the deck as her life blood drains away from her and the light goes out of her eyes.

So long Adelheid, we hardly knew ye...

First attack: 8 miss
Second attack: 4 miss

First dodge: 14 +1 = 15, fails (she needs 16 due to the armor), damage: 5, armor roll: 2, 3 points of damage.

She had 2 left since her last round, so she's out.

As a reminder, 4 points of damage were inflicted on the first skeleton.

Safari looks at Adelheid's fallen body, panic in his eyes. The abominations are too many, the crew will all surely fall for the furious onslaught of the undead! He dimly realizes that he's hit, as blood seeps from a deep gash in his chest. It burns, it burns!

Skeleton damage d6 = 6. Total hit points 11 - 6 = 5 HP remaining

He lashes out with his trusted runic machete ... hoping to at least buy himself some room to maneuver, maybe jump into the thrashing sea, maybe better to drown then be beheaded by a walking skeleton. But the attack goes wide as he slips on the blood of his fallen comrades.

Attack with trusted runic weapon (needs 10 to hit). d20 roll = 4 - 0, so a wide swing and a miss.

Sensing its opportunity, the skeleton grins wide ... as it always does .. and moves in for the kill. But the stumble that made Safari miss his attack saves his life, as the skeleton's sword only nicks his ear.

Defense. d20 roll = 6 + 0, so he takes a hit. Skeleton damage d6 = 1. Total hit points 5 - 1 = 4 HP remaining

I don't believe in the no-win scenario
Bautista Bedlam Lure wails about wildly bashing skeleton after skeleton, eventually they begin to swarm Bedlam in unmanageable numbers. Suddenly, the shipfolk of the Trantula can hear him sing out, as if he had a choir behind him...

"Vou-me embora, vou partir; mas tenho esperança (I'm going away, I'm going to leave; yet I hope)
De correr o mundo inteiro: quero ir! (To travel across the whole world: I want to go!)
Quero ver e conhecer, rosa branca, (I want to see and know, oh white rose)
A vida do marinheiro, sem dormir!" (The sleepless sailor's life!)

Blow after blow, strike after strike, Bedlam somehow stays on his feet but his singing begins to strain, his effort to stand eventually fails, his breathing ends as he whispers...

A vida do marinheiro, branca flor, (The sailor's life, oh white blossom,)
Que anda lutando no mar com talento. (He who goes about fighting in the high seas, with talent.)
Adeus! Adeus, minha mãe e meu amor: (Goodbye! Goodbye, my dear mother and my love:)
Eu hei-de ir, hei-de voltar com o tempo... (must go, I shall return after some time...)

I didnt roll damage from the skeleton first round but....

As Bedlam sings his last lyric, there's a crunch of wood as the two ships grind together, as enormous waves attempt to tip both of them over. The skeletons battling Safari, Tokwith and The Leperchaun tumble into the water, as do the corpses of Bedlam and Adelheid.

Davies gives a wordless cry, and Safari, Tokwith and The Leperchaun see him pinned to the mast, a three-foot long plank shoved through his heart. Blood bubbling from his mouth, he thrusts out one hand, a rolled-up map in his hand.

Safari looks aghast at Davies and then at his surronding crew members. Hesitatingly, he gently eases the rolled-up map from the dying man's hand. Then he tries to assess the damage to the ship. Is it going down?

He casts a glance at Tokwith and The Leperchaun.

"Should we abandon ship, mateys?
