sorry about the misunderstanding then. it really sounded like you were being condescending. we try to limit our 3.0 use but for the most part anything is fair game. the enchantment is from the arms and equipment guide. it attaches a portable hole to your crossbow like a clip, the portable hole can hold 100 arrows and it makes reloading the crossbow a move equivalent action instead of a full round. rapid reload would reduce that move equivalent action to a free action.

But your reading of the reducing loading time requires "house rules" or an interpretation since the rapid reload feat and the enchantment both say that they make reloading a heavy crossbow a move action - neither says that they "reduce the loading time by a step". This is not to say that is not a reasonable interpretation but not a strictly by rules one.

Rapid shot requires a full attack action to work so you can't get an extra shot unless you make the reloading a free action.

Also backtracking to when you were talking about using "larger" crossbows - I think care needs to be done there also since the ballista size ones require longer than a full round to reload.

yeah, like i said, we have a pretty lenient DM. I am actually going to be using a large great crossbow now. it's big, but not ballista big so it shouldn't take any longer than it already does to load.
 

FWIW, Quick Loading is in Magic Item Compendium, too: p. 41. I thought I read a FAQ about Rapid Reload & Quick Loading, but I couldn't find it just now.
 

well think about it. if the bolt is automatically loaded for me (quick-reloading) then all i have to do is pull the string back. and if i am really good at that (rapid reload) then it shouldn't take me very long.
