Pirates of the Carribean.

I have my fingers crossed. I see this project as having three accidents of fate against it, however:
  1. Name a good pirate movie from the last twenty years. Pirate movies have been sucking for a long time. Maybe this film will buck the trend, but still, it's worrisome.
  2. Gore Verbinsky: this is the man who directed Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and James Gandolfino into nothingness in The Mexican. I worry about his ability to make this thing work since he's proven he can turn out stinkers with great casting already. Now he also did Mouse Hunt, which was pretty fun, and The Ring, which had its moments, so he's not a total disaster, but he's no slam-dunk, that's for sure.
  3. Johnny Depp. Don't get me wrong, I love the oddball pretty-boy. But he's definitely hit-or-miss, and he's definitely gotten himself involved in some real clunkers. Every time a Johnny Depp movie comes up I have to wince and hope that this time he won't make a fool of himself. His presence is just not a reliable predictor of quality, is all.
    [/list=1]
So I guess I can't say that it looks bad, but that it contains worrisome elements. Were Steven Sommers directing, or if it were starring Kevin Kline, then sure, I'm on board right now. But there's some factors here that seriously make me question how it's going to turn out.

Crossing my fingers, though. I'd sure love a good pirate movie. Arrr...

The Mexican is the reason I am looking forward to this show, that and its got pirates! Plus, it is one of my favorite rides. :D

Wow, I thought "The Mexican" was pretty good.

BUT IT HAS WALKING SKELETONS! We havn't seen that since Jason and the Argonauts (ok army of darkness)! Also that moonlight trick! Rock on!

I need to find some pirate fiction...

ARRRRR!

I'm really looking forward to it, and hoping against hope that it will match my expectations.

I'm an unabashed swashbuckler fan. I have real difficulty watching silent films (so... overacted... head... exploding!) but I've seen and enjoyed a lot of the old swashbucklers, not to mention reading some of the greats as e-texts and even converting some of the best ones available through Project Gutenberg to PDF files.

I am fairly new to the swashbuckler/pirate thing, what are some good pirate stories besides Treasure Island, the princess bride, and the count of monte cristo?

I am a bit more enthused finding out the director of the Mexican is also the director of this movie.

The Mexican ranks up there with Way of the Gun as a golden age noir type inspired gritty films with memorable characters that tend to be overlooked or disparged for lack of simple to follow plot. (say that 3 times fast)

A straight Pirate film would be nice with minimal fantasy elements.

Even if the movie sucks, I'll see it at least twice - just for the sailing ships...

But the plot seems pretty good; and we know that at least Orlando Bloom is a fairly good actor.

It's been far too long since we beheld a decent pirate movie...

ARR!!!

:)
