Planescape 3.5e - Cold Black Mask

Sindr gets an idea and begins to leaf through his spellbook. He motions each of the companions in the room over to him and whispers quietly to each, "I'll prepare a spell of arcane warding to alert me to any unwelcome visitors in the night. If any of you need to leave the room and return, the password to not set off the alarm will be 'sunberry'. I'll cast the spell once Istvan returns." With that, Sindr begins studying his spellbook intently, running his finger from line to line and silently forming the words of the arcane enchantment.

[sblock=OOC]Sindr will prepare alarm in his open 1st level spell slot, and cast it once Istvan returns. It takes 15 minutes to prepare the spell, it wards a 20' radius area (so the whole room basically - it won't pass through walls, closed doors, shut windows, etc), and lasts for 8 hours. Sindr will set it for mental alarm mode, which will automatically wake him (but only him) if anyone crosses into the area warded by the spell without saying the password.[/sblock]

István Angushtri:[sblock] Surprise Round: The raven never sees the attack coming, and there's an soundless explosion of black feathers as the crystal blade thrusts into the bird, discharging its pent-up energy in a mental flash. (Attack = AC 23; hit). The raven flops around a bit on the end of the blade, then amazingly, wrenches itself free. Its form warps and twists until the creature before you resembles not a raven, but a short, bat-winged humanoid with a barbed scorpion's tail and hate-filled eyes. Black blood oozes from the rapier's wound. (Damage before DR = 21).

Round 1:
Imp's initiative = 17
István's initiative = 15

The imp -- István had heard enough stories to know it for what it was -- seems to screech something, although the aura of Silence mutes its words. It quickly takes to the air, flying up and away from the gnome. István's hurried thrust misses its mark (AoO = 15; miss. Imp is 50 feet away and out of Silence radius). As it takes flight, its wound seems to close on its own,

(Now on István's initiative. And nope, it wasn't a normal raven. ;) )

Sindr's words hang in the air as time marches on; first five, then ten, then twenty minutes. After nearly a half hour passes, Hagen stirs uneasily.
"Does anyone know where István was planning to go?"

"That's what I was thinkin', unless you twig to th' idea o' walkin' back at night."

Lilly shook her head quickly. "Bar that! I don't know how you talked me into coming her in the first place." It has hard to tell if she was teasing, given that it had been her idea.
The tiefling cast a glance at the simple accomodations. "Two beds," she noted with a disappointed pout, now definitely teasing.

"It wasn' difficult." Anthony responds to her teasingly. He glances at the beds. "Aye." He looks around the room, noting what other furnishings it has.

[sblock=Cage Rattler]OOC: Damn. Decent damage, but I was hoping István would succeed in dropping the thing in one hit. Oh well, a running fight it is then. :] Thanks for the AoO and nice description BTW. It's not clear if the imp is flying level across the rooftops where István can follow it but I'll go ahead and assume that's the case until told otherwise. Considering the kinds of spans that he can traverse by running and leaping it would seem to be a reasonable assumption.

The gnomish harrier takes up pursuit of the fleeing fiend without a moment's pause. Keeping his attention firmly fixed on the flying creature as it flaps wildly just a few steps ahead of him, István silently runs along the slate shingled rooftop of the boarding house. As he moves, the whisper gnome leaps deftly over chimneys, window gables and decorative ironwork spikes with magically silenced footfalls (charging 50-ft. directly towards the imp, +2 bonus to attack, -2 penalty to AC, while using whatever cover is available along the rooftop to attempt to hide his approach from the imp, Hide +23 with a -20 penalty for charging, all as a move equivalent action). Having caught up to the infernal creature the gnomish harrier lunges forward with his crystal shard and, calling once more upon the uncanny agility granted to him by his magical fencing gloves (as a swift action), aims for its small vile heart (Standard action, skirmish attack with rapier +10, +2 for charging, 1d4-1+3d6 damage).

Edit: If you judge that István's path isn't straight enough or is too obstructed to charge in a straight line, then go ahead and disregard that part. Instead, he'll try leaping just before his attack so that he's striking downwards at them imp, thus getting a height bonus. Likewise, if you judge that István is aware that devils are vulnerable to silver weapons, then he'll draw his silver dagger as part of his move action and use it to strike at the imp rather than his crystal rapier. Every other detail can remain the same I believe.[/sblock]

"Ummm... out?" Sindr offers helpfully.

István Angushtri:[sblock] Round One: The imp's leathery wings beat furiously in its effort to distance the fleet-footed gnome, to no avail; István's charge quickly overtakes the fiend once more, but this time the imp sees him coming and frantically twists out of the way of his seeking rapier. (Imp succeeds Spot check; Attack = AC 19; miss due to imp's Dodge feat. AoO as imp leaves threatened area misses; Attack = Natural 1).

Round 2: The imp banks and dives suddenly to street level, making a beeline for a small warehouse a short distance down the street. István could only guess what the little devil would want there, but he knows that he doesn't have much chance to act before it reaches the building.

(Now on István's initiative for Round 2. The gnome knows that devils are said to possess a weakness to either cold iron or silver, but can't recall which -- he could always pick one at random and see what works. :D Silence has 2 rounds remaining.)[/sblock]

"Well, I doubt he had a casual evening stroll in mind when he left. Don't you agree he's been gone for some time? Perhaps we should look for him -- especially since there are spies out searching for us."

Glancing about the room, Anthony notes that it is rather spartan; essentially a common area sectioned off into individual sleeping areas by retractable curtains. A faint mumur of noise behind one set of drawn curtains suggests that Kalel is also in residence. A weatherbeaten trunk -- obviously used for storing personal affects -- sits between the two small beds reserved for the aasimar and tiefling.

"Well, You can 'ave first pick." He says to Lilly, with his usual lack of gravity but making sure to keep his voice low to avoid disturbing the Bariaur. "If ya need somethin' don' hesitate to ask."

[sblock=Cage Rattler]I can't believe István has missed three attacks in a row. Meh. István is quickly running out of magic and time and this thing is continuing to heal; he's going to have to switch weapons if he's to have any chance of winning now. I'll let you pick which dagger he draws. And by my count István's silence effect has only been running for three rounds; that'd leave 7 rounds of silence left, not 2.

His continuing efforts to defeat the wily devil having proven ineffective thus far, the gnomish harrier takes a steps off the edge of the roof in seeming defiance of gravity and deftly runs down the wall to the street below. Leaping the last few feet to the ground, István switches orientation and swiftly closes the distance between himself and the fleeing imp as he draws a dagger from beneath the black bracer on his forearm and leaps up over the creature (moving up to the imp while drawing a weapon and using whatever cover is available along the street to hide his approach from the imp, Hide +23 with a -20 penalty for attacking, all as a move equivalent action). Reversing his grip on the dagger, István thrusts the sharpened blade ahead towards the creature's head as he comes crashing down on the imp (Standard action, skirmish attack with dagger +9, +1 height bonus, 1d3-1+1d6 damage).

To clarify, could István determine how much damage reduction and fast healing the creature has demonstrated during their battle? How far is the warehouse entrance from the pair?[/sblock]

Pierce looks over the room, approving of the security measures so far.

"I will stand the mid-watch, and watch for the gnome if he chooses to return," she says simply. The room was a secured position, and with the windows shuttered and the door barred, it made for a decent place to rest, even for one who needed protection.

Pierce stripped out of her heavy armor to rest, her clothing beneath being a series of elaborate wrappings between her body spikes. Finding a single piece of clothing that could be both tailored to one's spikes and tough enough to not rip by accident was usually either futile, or so expensive that one might as well spend the money on weapons and armor and be done with it.

"You have a good grasp of personal protection," she compliments the party before turning in, pulling a metal mesh-covered folding cot out of her chainmail bag, lining it with her armor and weapons to make it comfortable, and settling down with an unpleasent metallic screeching noise.
