Planetouched races in Dragon Magazine

Tie-fling

Hearing anybody over the age of eight say, "teefling", sends me into a blind rage. Sorry. The others I'm sort of flexible on, but if someone in my group said teefling they'd have to reform their ways or face the possibility that they might be spitting out their teeflings like little white chiclets. ;)

Tea-fling is what happened at the Boston Tea Party, not what happens when a demon schtups a human.

Edit: Thanks Aitch Eye for including the link to the critters.zip, though everyone should take into account that it's fan created, not canon. I've had a copy buried on my HD for a few years.
Heh, even if it was made by WoTC employees I'd be leery of it. I have the Real Audio interviews from Wizard's old countdown to 3E website, and one of the emloyees pronounces Pelor as pee-lore. And as we all know, pee lore is what planar urologists study, not the name of a Greyhawk deity. :D

I'm with you, Bran. Some 'official' pronunciations I just can't support. Drow as cow is one such. And I'm not real found of teefling either, I say it more like tifling. Don't know why, but I like that sound better than any alternative.

But I don't like genasi the way you pronounce it, and I have some folks that say it that way as well. Planetouched races based on elemental planes that sound like genocide just is a bit weird.

Well then, you should brush up on your German...

When you order a hotdog, do ask for a "weener", or a "winer"... The word is spelled "wiener" (after Vienna).

In fact, there is a German word "Tief", pronounced "teef", meaning "low". Kind of makes sense then to call the demon-spawn Tieflings, eh?

And I always assumed:

* Genasi from "Genie", the archetypal elemental humanoids

* Aasimar from "Aasimon" (though I'm not sure if anyplace other than D&D used this term...)

I didn't say it didn't make sense, just that I didn't like it.
On that note, thank you for associating the pronunciation of tiefling with that of wiener, that makes a lot of sense to me...

Edit: Seriously, the "lowling" thing is interesting, but I can't stand being assaulted by the sound of someone saying teefling. On the other hand, I have never had a problem with drow ryhmes with cow.

Not to pick nits Jack ;). I definately agree with the pronunciation, but the meaning is actually much closer to "deep" than to "low". In german "niedrig" (nee-drig) would be low. So Tiefling comes out to be more closer to "deepling"..... I find that a bit more abyssal :D

'specially if you consider that in 2e Baatezu couldn't mate with mortals (from the Blood War boxed set, IIRC)... so most tieflings would actually have Tanar'ri blood.

Hey... No nit to pick... I'm a very modest German speaker. I don't get enough practice to remember any of my vocabulary nearly as well as I should. Thanks for the correction.

And you're right, "deepling" does sound better.
