Planetouched races in Dragon Magazine

Sigma: yes, that was quite annoying. Why the ooze genasi had to look like the swamp thing, and why the magma genasi looked like the Thing with a sunburn I'll never understand.

bwgwl: Thanks, I thought so. Since I'm addicted to tinkering with homebrew, I always need some new idea. :)

ForceUser: I like it quite a bit too. I'd really like it if the rumours of Planescape 3e being produced by SSS (in conjunction with Malhovic press, perhaps?) come true.

I've always said:

ghen AHS ee
ASS ih mar
TIH fling

but some of them just didn't sit right.

That's a really good idea, several outsider templates for different gods or less powerful outsiders. I mean someone with a trace of succubus shouldn't have a -2 charisma. In no way should they have the same stats as someone descended from a Balor or Pit Fiend, but now they do.

Lets see what few types would be needed (just archytypes) These templates could be stacked to create devine ofspring (or those of very powerful outsiders like solars). For example a descendent of Hextor might have the Evil:Combat and Lawful:Domineering templates. While Kord might have Good:Crusading and Chaos:Destructive

Evil:
Cunning, deciteful, magical (Quasit, Imp, Osyluth, etc)
Alluring (Succubus, Erinyes, etc.)
Combat (Kyton, Barbazeu, etc.)

Lawful:
Domineering (Efreet, etc)
Organized, obediant (Formarians, etc)

Good
Benevolent (Ghaele, Astral Diva,etc)
Crusading (Solar, Planatar, Hound Archon, etc)

Chaos
Destroying (Slaad)
Unpredictable, free, random (Djinni, Titan, etc)

These catagories might have slight variation in spell like abilities base on the specific parent. Ex. a Kyton could animate chains, while another feindish combat template might have a different ability.

Do you think this has potential, and would anyone like to see it if I write some stuff on this up?

now THAT sounds like a cool idea!

i suppose they threw in the dust and steam genasi (or whatever they're called) because there are dust and steam mephits. even though i haven't seen any indication in 3e that there are paraelemental planes to match.

in a certain cosmology, i could definitely see dust and steam paraelemental planes: dust is the combination of air and earth; steam is the combination of fire and water. with those, you'd have a complete set -- each plane would form a paraelemental plane with each of the three others.

[edit]but aren't there also salt mephits? i don't remember if the article included "salt genasi."[/edit]

I don't think there are para-elemental planes in 3e at all anymore, just pockets of para-elementalness in the main elemental planes.

I've been playing with pronounciations lately, and have started using:

Tyf-ling (rhymes with knife-ling)
Ghen-ah-syh
Az-ih-mahr

Yes, there are salt mephits, and there was a quasi-elemental plane of salt. However, in Manual of the Planes there's no mention of the para or quasi elemental planes anymore. There are some para-elementals in the monster section (who supposedly live in pockets of the main elemental planes now) and the optional planes section does mention a plane of ice. That's about it, though.

Happiest_Sadist: yes, I'd like to see them! Sounds like lots of work, though...

Here's my main output regarding Planetouched and other races.

Whatever humanoid creatures a planetouched individual may have in their bloodline (whether it's human, orc, elf, gith, whatever), they all balance out to whatever the standard planetouched stats were. Fey'ri and Tannarruk are specials cases and are creature in my opinion shouldn't exist because it caused too much complications.

And finally I have my own work one planetouched races which is still in development. What I have so far is located at http://members.shaw.ca/jykng/planetouched.html

Which currently divides Tieflings into bloodlines, gives them different ability modifiers and a menu of abilities to choose from. Note one of the biggest things is that they are considered to be Planar Humanoids instead of Outsiders, unless they choose to have the special abilty of Outsider Type.

Another thing I'll change with my project is the fiction and in character stuff. I felt it was better to explain why there's so much information on different Planetouched types because there's this secret society out there breeding different varieties of Planetouched and doing experiments..

ps3e will have all of these....

Mabybe not the Dragon version, but we'll have Afterburner's para- and quasi- genasi (you can find 2e stats for 'em, somewhere in a link in Planewalker), and my own version of the Lawtouched, the Chaostouched, the Neutraltouched, Half-Anarchs, Half-Axioms, and Half-Balanced. (hehe...unbalanced).

Also, there's a good chance of us making them templates instead of full-fledged races. They'll probably loose most of their racial powers, however.

That, and new factions. Whee! :)

If these don't pop up in the campaign setting, they'll be in a Book of the Planetouched to be produced later. There, you'll also find tables for alternate abilities for planetouched, as per the Planewalker's Handbook's tiefling tables.

So have a lil' bit more patience, and BAM! you'll have all you need. :)
