In fact, Druids and Clerics will still "rock the house" compared to a Duckblade.

I dunno. I think the Duckblade is the mightiest class out there.

Ever seen a Duckblade ambushed? No way. Because all the other NPCs are afraid. They know if they mess with one Duckblade, they gotta deal with the whole party.

swell...

thanks so far. So, the duckblade is not as broken as it appears to me. In fact I have staged quite a few encounters involving a duckblade and they regularly ended up with him being "last man standing". DBs aren't invincible for sure. yet, they're mean mothers.
The whole point about me ranting around is the hexblade's relative lack of punch when compared to the duckblade. Where does the HB excel in direct comparison to the DB?
Skill pts? Special Abilities? Bonus feats? Oh yeah, he gets more hp! Spell selection (ok, that's one point for style, but not for punch)? Hellyeah! There's CHA on saves vs spells and SAs (but neither vs Ex nor Su or whatever) and METTLE (what's that good for on low levels anyway? stray-fired disintegrates?). Not to forget: You may never become good or otherwise all your "Power Stuff" is gone for good, never to return AFAIK and without the possibility to compensate for your loss in ANY way.
Flavorwise, the HB has the "crafty fighter" appeal to me, but in practice he's got perfect justification for an inferiority complex.

Now that I think of it...those wizards sure are sneaky bastards. they trick me into "deep immersion RP", inducing that sullen, gloomy feeling only an inferiority complex can give birth to and no true HB can go without.

My experiences tell me, synergistic freak-shows aside, that where the DB is dangerous the HB is merely a nuisance. Thus, I feel a dire need for revision of the HB.

Agree or perish ;)

The Duskblade seemed okay, IMO, while the Hexblade was almost laughably weak. Its curse attack has too few uses combined with a weakish DC - unless the HB goes with huge charisma which will leave their conventional abilities behind and they don't have divine feats to turn that CHA back into damage or AC.

I was thinking mostly of the Lion Totem ability in CC. Pounce is one of the more powerful abilities around by itself, so to make it available at first level (on a class already popular for dips) is pretty much insane. Plus there are many charge specific damage boosting effects that aren't really supposed to work with Pounce.

This is where House Rules come into play!

Were I in your shoes, and a player wanted to use a Hexblade, I'd give the Hexblade the SAME spell progression as the Duskblade (Hexblade spell table, though), then double or triple the Curse usage.

In addition, I'd make the Curse "No Save, No SR" to ensure a constant "HA! You've been HEXED!" effect.

Combine this with Combat Familiar and Mounted Combat feats and you've got a nasty charging gish! Curse + True Strike + Spirited Charge + Lance + Power Attack + Winter Wolf Mount = A crying DM.

Of course, this isn't the House Rules forum, so I'll probably get smited (Smote? Smitten? Smat?) any minute now.

Da, da, da, da, daaaa "Duckblade".

Sounds like an episode from Howard the Duck, right up there with "Iron Duck".

"Smote", I believe. And Complete Champion is pretty horrible for power creep, I honestly don't know what they were thinking with some of the stuff in there.

Pounce for first level barbarian being the obvious culprit, but some of the feats... Holy Warrior, Law Devotion... ugh. They actually make me feel guilty for picking them ! Protection Devotion is even worse, but most of the Devotion feats are overly powerful. (Aside from War Devotion... that ones a ripoff compared to the rest)

Thanks so far, folks, esp. Victim and Satori.
I'll move over to the House Rules forum. Don't want anyone having to defile this here forum ;)

Oh, and I think it's "smut"
