Yes. Mostly on the part of the referees who refuse to have an adult conversation with other adults about adult topics like what they do or don’t want at the table.
It would honestly never occur to me that my friends would be genuinely upset about a curse or turning into a monster.

If they were and I knew it I would plan something different but that would be shocking.

The implication of that statement was "stop in the middle of the game and make sure they know they're going to turn into an illithid". They said nothing about session 0.
Only when it’s taken out of context like it is in the first post.

This is not a page in the middle of the book, it’s from the Adventure breakdown at the start of the book that explains things to the GM.

of all the things in D&D why would turning into a tentacle monster need discussion?

Being turns to stone by a Medusa, dying, being fried by a dragons breath are not good outcomes.

I am not trying to be silly when I ask: will consent for character death be explicit in the new dmg?
I’m not sure how to explain what is so very much worse about a forced transformation of your body into a different and abhorrent body while you are alive and conscious…it seems dead simple obvious to me. I’ll have to think about it.

If the issue was extended mind control, instead, like permanently changing your character’s mind about an important thing, event, or person, would it make sense for you?

Right. Which is exactly why referees should bring it up. You’re running the show. You control what’s in and what’s not. So check in with your friends. Don’t assume you know.

We are all individuals it’s true.

If my friends like the alien movies or vampire movies or lots of geeky fiction I don’t see why this is a special case.

Not matter I guess. They felt it was and made the call.

I go into D&D strongly suspecting very bad things can happen to my character.

Fomorians cursed out party recently and my cleric and my pal’s cleric both were deformed with a slower speed and penalties. Will new editions of MM have disclaimers about monster effects? Maybe. Maybe dmg will
Just push more discussion in general ahead of time as. Blank thing.

When it happened, it was a question of who has what prepared, what if we have another encounter before we are well and how long will it last. Good fun. Adversity.

I really cannot fathom anyone at the table taking such fiction seriously or relating it to their life. I am sure there is someone who might but if that is the bar they need disclaimers on…a whole lot of stuff. 🤷‍♂️
