Whereas being the GM is a lot more work, I think I like it more because that means I can (a) control the flow of the story and (b) don't have an excuse to drift off and get caught not paying attention. ;)

(snip)...and DMing seems like it is more up to the PC's to do all of the fun stuff, what do you think?

I DM a weekly game and, until taking my current job, played in a bi-weekly one.

I find that I enjoy DM'ing just as much as playing...setting up puzzles and quandries, challenging the PC's, hearing the players spend smoke-breaks discussing stratagy and casting side-long glances at me...it's all great fun.

With my group, I DM one campaign and play in two others. I would like to DM more often, but my turn only comes up about every 6-8 weeks.

I like being a player. My biggest enjoyment in rpgs comes from discovering new places and meeting new people. If I'm the DM I'm telling the story, not living it out-I already know what's around the next corner and in the next village, the joy of exploring and discovering isn't there for me.

What I want to know is, if the DM to player ratio is so high, why is it so hard to find a DM?

If I could only do one or the other, I'd pick DMing, although I really, really miss playing at least occasionally. Finding a good & willing DM to step in for a short stint or another campaign to just play in is tough.

I prefer DMing, but still like playing. Over my gaming life, I've probably GMed 95%+ of the time, which is a bit too much.

So, by the sound of it, I should have put an option that you would like to play but can't. Sucks to be you guys. Ther's another thread asking what people do after games, you might try swiching DM's for fun, and have them GM another rpg.

I am the DM most of the time by far. I try to be a player, but they all say that I am such a great DM that my playing in their campaigns would shame them because of the inferiority it would be for me to lower myself to participating in such a campaign. At least, that is what I like to think they are saying when they decide I get to continue being the DM :) .
