Players: Do You Buy Your Own Miniatures?

My players all freeload off the munificence of the DM... not sure if they'll change their approach with the new PHB minis coming out in a few months.

What I suspect is they'll want me (the DM) to make the outlay and they'll pitch in.

I used to have my players buy their own minis and then I would paint them. Now, I just buy them and paint them. I used to give my players their mini at the end of the campaign, but now I keep them to use in future campaigns.

So, my players would be more than willing to buy their own minis. However, I only have one player who is even slightly interested in painting minis.

yeah, i kinda do. For one i love mini and buy them anyway, but if no one else in the group is providing them i feal like i should.

it helps that i keep a largish (possibly huge ) box of them in the trunk of my car for emergance use.B-)

Just thoriwng it out there.

As a player, do you feel repsonsible for bringing your own miniature or do you rely on the DM to provide one? Or use a stand up or some other representation. (I understand candy is often used for this but beware! The GM may decide the quickest way to claim said candy is kill the character!)

Absolutely. I hate the prepainted crap. The DM has a large collection of prepainted minis, but turns to me for more unusal ones, as I have rckham, reaper and a variety of metal ones.

I've also supplied 3 otehr players with their own unique minis.

My players do not generally buy their own. But then, I'm the one who likes to occasionally paint minis. I usually sit down with them to look over minis online, and order and paint their characters minis for them.

All nine of my players have a miniature of their own. One is plastic, all the rest are metal and custom painted. The cleric even has miniatures for all the creatures she summons. One player supplied his own horse miniature, and the two who use riding dogs have minis that are being painted.

The first group I was in, when I first started playing, pretty much had it as a rule that you brought your own mini. Everyone had one, and everyone painted their own. Bad paint jobs weren't ridiculed, minis without paint were. Partly because of this group, and the fact that minis are just soooooo coooool, I started collecting significant amounts of them.

When I was assigned to Korea, most people didn't bring very many minis (since they didn't know if they would even find someone to game with, and they weren't worth the extra shipping weight for a one year tour).

My last group, in Georgia, really wasn't in to minis, so I became the default mini provider. Didn't bother me at all though, I was buying more minis anyways.:D

Everyone in our campaign has their own minis; I occassionally buy DDM boosters for my own purposes, so I just use one of those for my character. I don't have the skill, inclination, or patience to paint my own minis.

I like to use lots of minis and terrain in my sessions. I guess I've never gotten over my delight in playing with "army men." At any rate, only one player in five brought their own mini. The others claimed a fig from my collection and that was fine.
