Never played Neverwinter Nights 1, so I can't comment on the story, but from what I've read of the mechanics I prefer Never Winter Nights 2.

For me NWN was all about the toolsets. The single player game was just a side-bonus. And the second toolset just didn't do it for me.

Yeah, that was the problem.

With NWN1, you had a godawful default game (with some of the worst use of alignment in RPG history, and a main NPC who was basically some sort of horrible fan-fiction character), but a great set of tools.

With NWN2, the default game was much improved, but the tools just weren't up to scratch.
