To explain. My DM will never let me play a Kender. Not that any of the Meepites are thinking of playing in a Dragonlance game but I have been told that I (and only I) can never play a Kender in his games. I think he realises that I'm 80% Kender already and for me to play one would open a hole to the abyss and bring about the rise of the true god of the Chaos realms.
That or he just wants to be mean to me. :(

So back to the question... Has anyone ever faced the type of discrimination as I am?

Ya, I'm not allowed (or wasn't by my old group) to play a gully dwarf. Why is it that it's always the Dragonloance races people hate??

No.

In fact, I'm usually the one in the group who's offered more powerful races (without ECL, of course).

"Oh, Folkert, wouldn't you like to play a drow in our 1st level game?"

Folkert

It hasn't come up yet in my group, but I bet they wouldn't want me playing a dwarf in a long campaign.

You can only take so much over-the-top, charicatured scotish accent.

That alone is reason to bar you from the gaming table!

Seriously, I've never seen a racial restriction on an individual player, although I was in a game where one player was barred from playing Paladins because the GM was tired of debates over justifications for certain acts ("Orcs aren't really people so that wasn't really rape..." kinda stuff, proving the GM was far more patient that I ever will be in regards to such things).

Your not alone. My brother used to DM alot back in the day ('bout 15 to 20 years ago, or so) and he HATED dwarves. Now, I'm not sure if he ever told anyone you couldn't play a dwarf, but I'm pretty sure you'd have a rough time if you did. Personally, I couldn't tell. Everytime I played a dwarf, regardless of game or GM, the character would die of poison very early on. In rolemaster, I spent hours making a 5th level dwarf ranger-type to replace a previous character who died. I spent even more time customizing his equipment to perfectly match the concept. I even lucked out and found a mini that looked just like him. A giant scorpion stung him in the first battle and he died. I don't even think he got to introduce himself to the rest of the PC's. :(

I think my brother also hated any character our mutual friend, Rodney, played. In the very first campaign I played in, Rodney had worked a Paladin up high enough that having a holy avenger wouldn't be to far out of the question. My brother, being the nice guy he is, had him find a holy avenger. Of course, each time the paladin went into battle, Rodney had to roll to determine what kind of blade he was weilding (Dagger, shortsword, longsword, etc...) Then again, Rodney was banned from playing a thief in anyone's campaign and he wasn't allowed to play in anymore Gama World games either, so maybe my brother was just getting a little revenge.

Booooo, why is it always the kender who get the shaft? After much convincing, I was able to play a kender bard who was basically just good for nothing. But, he was such a fun character, that people still affectionately remember him years later. Definately one of the best characters I've ever played.

Welby Underfoot....sigh...the memories.....

I suppose it is possible to play a kender and not be super-annoying. Too often, though, I think they're attractive to people who like to play in the "Haha, I'm a big pain in the ass, but it's all in character! Acknowledge me!" style.

"In which case it was beastiality, which is also prohibited by your church. Turn in your holy symbol and holy avenger and enjoy your suspension."
