Players not speaking in character

Scottish accents?! LOL! Y'know, there's a Ranger NPC in the party I'm DMing I think I'll start using a *Sean Connerry* accent for, it'll be hilarious. Of course, my group's a little funny anyhow.

In all seriousness, for accents, I strongly suggest folks seek out the Radio version (from the 1970s) of the Lord of the Rings, it is excellent.

I'm very surprised by how down on accents a lot of you guys are. I regard a distinctive accent as the most important aspect of playing in character. Down my way, putting on an accent is pretty common and always enhances the game in my experience.

Obviously if it's completely OTT then it's being played for laughs but you just gotta tone it down a bit if you want to be serious. You guys can tone it down, right?

From the subject, I thought this thread was related to a problem I am having lately. My players have done accents from time to time, but right now, I am having a LOT of trouble getting rid of metaspeak, like asking NPC's what level they are, or making other RL references "in character."

I have never seen an accent enhance a game, nor can I think of any way in which it would do so (even theoretically.)
