There is a one point in your favor that you missed. If you have a Shield, that doesn't affect Firebolt.

And Javelins have quite a bit shorter range to use with True Strike.

So... randomly.
6.5 radiant, 30' or melee
Vs
5.5 fire, 120'

How does this nerf sit with you?

Components: S,M (a one handed weapon with which you have proficiency)
I'd like the caster to be able to use it with a bow or crossbow, both of which are two-handed.

It's a terrible spell for Bladelocks. Bladelocks already get the core effect, melee attacks with your caster stat, from Blade Pact. That only leaves the +xd6 at higher levels bonus, and to get that a Bladelock has to sacrifice their Extra Attacks. Which is not a favorable trade. The only use case for Bladelocks is if you have War Caster, you can squeeze a little extra damage out of an Opportunity Attack
I can't believe my brain wasn't working, you are so correct.

I hope that it not applying here is both RAW and RAI. I like the existence of the cantrip as a way to keep weapon users competitive with other cantrips, but evokers should use evocations.
I'm sure it's not RAI, but my reading by RAW is that you damage yourself....

When you cast a cantrip at a creature and you miss ... the target takes half the cantrip’s damage.

If "self" is the target, then "self" takes damage.

But you're never "missing" yourself because you are not attacking or forcing saves upon yourself, which are the only things that could cause you to "miss."

Yea. That's probably the best way to read it.

The cantrip isn't making an attack roll or dealing damage. It's just allowing a modifed weapon attack.

I mean, you wouldn't consider crown of madness as making attack rolls either.

So then I guess it wouldn't apply to True Strike.
